#111: Lucy O’Hagan - Wilderness Fasts, Ethno-Nationalism & Queerness of Nature
The Earthly Delights PodcastShow Notes
Lucy O’ Hagan is a very inspirational person. She has been on a fascinating journey, a journey that we couldn’t do justice to in one hour. However, we did cover a lot. I primarily asked Lucy onto the podcast to talk about her work with WildAwake – a fantastic organisation designed to help people connect to themselves, their communities and the non-human life on earth in a deeper way. Wildawake through Ancestral Skills, Ethnobotany, Wildlife Tracking and Trailing as well as Rites of Passage Training invite people to relate to the natural world in a way we have forgotten. Part of this Rites of Passage training with Wildawake includes a process which is often described as a Wildness Fast or Vision Quest which is an ancient ceremony involving several days of fasting in the natural world with little to no human company nor modern distraction. This conversation attempts to delve deeper into this rich process, why Lucy felt the call to Wilderness fasting and how it deepened her relationship with the land and inspired her work in Donegal with Wildawake. We also talk about the rise of ethno-nationalism in Ireland and consider how combined with economic precarity and misinformation online, this racism might be seen as a symptom of the significant disconnection many Irish people feel to their language, to their tradition, to their stories, to their land. Lucy also shares some of her observations facilitating ceremonies and from her extended time on the land, including the ‘inherent queerness of the natural world’. This was a beautiful chat which I think might serve as necessary nutrition for many given the disconnection, polarisation and violence going on close to home at the moment. Lucy’s story reminds me of our collective need to listen to the natural world, to learn about the ways of our ancestors and to pay homage to these practices and worldviews. You can find more information about Wildawake and Lucy through the link below. As always, thanks for making the time to listen and thanks to Lucy for getting up early for our call https://www.wildawake.ie/

Eamon Armstrong is an artist, podcaster, and as of this month, a published author. I’ve invited him onto the podcast because he’s a very deep, kind and relatable person. His journey towards self-connection and authenticity is very inspirational. I initially reached out to him after I listened to his podcast on the topic of an Inspirational Masculinity for the left which I felt uplifting and nourishing. After I reached out, he kindly sent me his memoir “Many- Minded Man” which I read in a week. This lengthy conversation begins around masculinity, the manosphere, Clavicular, Bad Bunny and then moves into some of the key areas of his memoir, namely; his problematic relationship to porn, its detrimental consequences on his sex life and his voyage towards self-compassion and sexually thriving through the help of kink and other resources. We also explore the role of psychedelics and men’s work in Eamon’s personal growth as well his exploration and embracing of more feminine parts of him. Shout out to Aim! His memoir is out now and I would highly recommend it to anyone. If interested, you can preorder the book here- https://www.eamonarmstrong.com
Our guest this episode is Tatiana Fyodorov, creator of Deep Chats. Deep Chats is a community where people have...you guessed it...DEEP CHATS! It's a space where people feel open and comfortable enough to talk to absolute strangers about real, nuanced topics that create real connections. Tatiana talks to us about her upbringing and how it shaped her into being the type of person who isn't overly interested in small talk, but wants to get to know the real you immediately, and why this urge ultimately led her to create Deep Chats. Thanks for listening! You can follow on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/deepchatsx/
Our guest is Tom Hopcroft, founder of the "Guiris de Mierda" community. Seb talks to Tom about his unconventional path to Madrid, Spain, and how slowly but surely he went from being a primary school teacher teaching English to creating his own community, hosting events in various cities in Spain, allowing people to connect and create their own community, something he himself was missing at the time. We talk about the idea of shame and fear holding you back, and once you rid yourself of those shackles, as Tom has so clearly done, you are free to live the life you want to! Find more about him here: https://www.instagram.com/tomcharliedesign/ https://www.instagram.com/guirisdemierda/ Thanks to Tom for making time, and thanks to you all for listening.
Rob Doyle is an Irish author of four internationally acclaimed books: Threshold, This Is the Ritual, Here Are the Young Men, which has been adapted for film, and his recently published Cameo. He has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, The Irish Times, to name a few. He was one of the first guests on the Earthly Delights Podcast back in 2020, yes, 6 years ago, and I was very grateful to sit down with him again and explore several themes that arise in his new book, Cameo, and his recent writing elsewhere. Rob has a gift for exploring the shadow of society through his work while also illuminating some of the most beautiful experiences of humanity. In this chat, we unpack weighty topics such as lust, post-psychedelic appreciation of religion and spirituality, addiction, as well as one of my favourite questions: what do we do with beauty? Cameo is incredible, and I’d highly recommend anyone who’s a little intrigued to grab a copy.
