A Cautionary Tale About Gambling

From Paychecks to Purpose

Show Notes

In this week's episode, I share a true story about how an extended family member of mine seriously altered their life through gambling. I share this story because the reality is that gambling is more widespread and easy to access than ever, and I don't think everyone grew up with an example of how things can go seriously awry with it like I did. I hope that this will help listeners avoid gambling addiction, and that it will help parents caution their kids into not falling into the trap that gambling can create. @notyourordinaryplan_: https://www.instagram.com/notyourordinaryplan_/

In this week's episode, Green joins me again! We give our opinions on a question recently posted on CoastFI and BaristaFI subreddits. This person's situation is very relevant to others in the not quite FI camp looking to expand their options, and we talk through our thoughts, as well as comment on the responses that the poster received on Reddit. We also discuss how this person could really use the RiskFI calculator, and Green shares a new segment of the calculator called GapFI where you can specifically look at how different gap periods in income change your FI timelines. Hope you enjoy! Disclaimer: this conversation and the RiskFI app references are not meant to be taken as financial advice. This is for entertainment purposes only. In this week's episode, my husband (nicknamed Green) and I discuss Green's recent journey down the FI rabbit hole. As someone who took this journey almost 6 years ago, it's been fun to have Green take a recent deep dive into the subject. we discuss a few FI podcasts he has really been enjoying, and his recent foray into his own concept of "Risk FI" - what it means, and a recent app he has been working on related to it. In today's episode, I reflect on the women of my past, inspried by a recent decluttering session of my childhood memorabilia. I also reflect on people in the present who I know to have a ton of willpower - funnily enough, they are all women! In this week's episode, I break down the relationship between savings rate and timelines to FI, and share a breakthrough that has me flipping conventional FI wisdom on it's head. What I realized is that for my specific situation, there is only a few years difference in my FI timeline if I continue to save at my current rate vs stopping saving completely. And so the reframe I am doing is: instead of having to wait until FI to make any career changes, examining the tradeoff between doing my current job for the next 10-15 years, vs. pivoting to a different one, since the reality is that even if I save nothing in a new role, the FI timeline wasn't as different as I expected. This reframe changed the way I am thinking about the next 10 years of my life. Hopefully this will be useful for those of you in the messy middle as well. In today's episode, I talk all about risk takers! I myself tend skew more conservative when it comes to taking risks. Others skew more aggressive. Either way, I share tips and reframes to think through for risk decisions you may be considering in your life. Hope you find it useful!
