Things You Can't Un-Hear

Specialist Breast Cancer Surgeon Dr Jasmina Kevric // The Truth About Breast Cancer & Menopause

Things You Can't Un-Hear

Show Notes

Today’s episode is one that I believe all women need to listen to - because the rates of breast cancer in Australia and around the world are increasing and they are affecting women of all ages. To have this conversation, I invited specialist breast surgeon Dr Jasmina Kevric - who operates from leading hospitals including Epworth and Cabrini in Melbourne. Dr Jasimina Kevric speaks to us today about the different types of breast cancer, the stages and grades that determine the diagnosis and the treatment that is offered for each different type of cancer. This is information that is vital to understanding what is happening to you and your body - if you are diagnosed, and I hope this will be a valuable resource to so many women who may have sat in their surgeon or oncologists office, and barely heard anything their doctor told them, after the words “you have breast cancer” were shared because it is common that everything said after that moment is a blur! This is not just for women who are or have experienced a diagnosis - it is also for partners and friends who want to understand it more and this is for all women who want to empower themselves with knowledge to decrease and even prevent their risks of breast cancer AND it is for for those who want more information about the increase in diagnosis during the perimenopause and menopausal ages and how we can safely treat menopause without putting ourselves at further risk. Dr Jasmina herself has such an interesting and inspiring personal story - which we also share in this chat — from arriving in Australia as a refugee to becoming a leading female surgeon dedicated to supporting women through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. I know this episode is important. So after you listen I want you to send it to all of your friends / family members who need to hear it too. And I want to hear your thoughts on anything that is shared here today - because this is a conversation that we need to keep having. // ▶︎ Join me on Instagram to let me know what your 'things you can't un-hear' moment was from this episode https://www.instagram.com/maritza_barone/ https://www.instagram.com/thingsyoucantunhear/ *If you love this show don't forget to subscribe and leave a 5 star review and subscribe! Today’s guest is one of those people that leaves an impact on you for a long time after leaving his presence. Bart Walsh joins me to share his experiences that shaped the man who is here with us today. At 23, Bart discovered a rapidly growing lump beneath his jaw, which was eventually diagnosed as a rare and aggressive sarcoma. His doctors told him the cancer needed to be removed urgently. They initially believed they would need to remove his jaw, part of his throat, his lower teeth and potentially his voice box, which was particularly devastating because Bart was an actor and his voice was central to his career and identity. Just days before surgery, his surgeon found another approach that could preserve his voice, although it meant a more complicated operation involving parts of his throat and tongue. The surgery ultimately removed his jaw, which was reconstructed using bone from his leg and tissue from his thigh, along with numerous teeth and other affected tissue. He then underwent six weeks of radiation therapy. Bart has described the recovery as incredibly difficult, both physically and psychologically, and says the cancer fundamentally changed his relationship with his body and his identity. And this is only part of his story. Bart has developed a powerful perspective on adversity, resilience and what we’re truly capable of. Today he shared so many moments I cannot stop thinking about. We shared tears, we shared laughter and we shared hope, and the fact that the things that almost break us ultimately make us who we are. From the young boy who always had a yearning to take the stage, Bart shares his hardest life lessons into tools to help US live better. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the world, and I wanted to use my voice to bring this conversation to the surface. Because this year, breast cancer has become very personal for me. Since the start of this year, two incredibly close people in my life have been diagnosed with breast cancer. And as I started speaking more openly about what they were going through, something else happened that I wasn't expecting. Other women started sharing their stories with me. Women I knew who had been through breast cancer themselves, or had watched their mum, sister, daughter or friend go through it. And I realised just how many stories are sitting quietly around us. Breast cancer is not some distant disease that happens to other people. It is affecting an extraordinary number of families, and the statistics really bring that home. Today I want to re-share an important interview I had earlier this year with leading breast cancer surgeon, Dr Jasmina Kevric, who is working with women every single day, and at the forefront of this disease. Breast cancer affect 1 in 7 women in Australia with about 56-58 women being diagnosed every single day. And about 1 in 8 women in the US. In Australia, around 56 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every single day. That's more than 20,000 people a year. And while those numbers are confronting, there is another statistic that gives us hope. Five-year survival for breast cancer in Australia has improved dramatically over the past few decades. It has risen from around 75% in the late 1980s and early 1990s to more than 92% today. That is an incredible reflection of what research, medical advancements and better treatment can achieve. // Check out my new wellness marketplace, curated just for you! What if there’s something inside you that you’ve been wanting to share, create, say or put into the world, but you’re still waiting for someone to give you the green light? For so much of my career, having a voice meant having someone else decide whether you were given a platform. Today, the barriers are very different. You don’t need millions of people listening to make an impact. You might simply want your children to hear your stories one day, inspire a handful of people, or reach an audience you’ve never imagined. The question is, what are you still holding back from sharing? Check out my new wellness marketplace, curated just for you! SHOP THE BRANDS I LOVE: Shop our tried & tested health and wellness brands.
