Low Carb Down Under

Dr. Stephen Phinney - 'Optimising Weight and Health with an LCHF Diet' - Part 3

Low Carb Down Under

Summary

The discussion centers on the nutritional strategies of ultramarathoners and the evolving understanding of carbohydrate intake in endurance sports. Insights reveal that elite athletes, such as Tim Olson, may rely on specific fueling methods, like consuming uncaffeinated gels at a controlled rate, while others have successfully completed races on minimal or no caloric intake. This raises questions about the traditional belief that high carbohydrate consumption is essential for performance.

The conversation also delves into the psychological and cultural factors influencing dietary choices, particularly regarding carbohydrates. It highlights the ingrained belief in the necessity of carbs for energy, which can be difficult to challenge, especially in cultures where certain foods are staples. Personal anecdotes illustrate how individuals have adapted their diets, such as transitioning to low-carb or ketogenic approaches, leading to significant health improvements, including weight loss and better metabolic markers.

Additionally, the dialogue touches on the implications of ketogenic diets for individuals with specific health conditions, such as impaired kidney function. Research suggests that a well-formulated ketogenic diet may not only be safe but could also improve kidney health in certain cases. The conversation concludes with reflections on the importance of individualized dietary strategies and the need for ongoing research to better understand the long-term effects of different nutritional approaches on health and performance.

Carolyn Rogers is a Brisbane-based Psychologist who works in private practice. She has a special interest and extensive experience in weight management and eating disorders. Before becoming a Psychologist, Carolyn was a Registered Nurse and she has a passion for health and science. In this presentation Carolyn describes a number of studies done by Psychologists using animal models, and later human models, to show the addictive properties of sugar. Sugar and highly-palatable processed foods can produce the same brain responses as substances of abuse. These processed foods pose a problem for anyone trying to control their weight because they hijack the appetite leading to a vicious cycle of overconsumption, withdrawal symptoms when access is denied and cravings, leading to further overconsumption.Carolyn Rogers can be contacted via her website at www.carolynrogers.com.au Learn more about your ad choices. Dr Anthony Chaffee is an American medical doctor specialising in Neurosurgery who over a span of 20 years has researched the optimal nutritional habits for athletic performance and health. It is his assertion that most of the so-called chronic diseases that doctors treat these days are actually caused by the food we eat, or don’t eat, and can in many cases be reversed easily with dietary changes.Dr. Chaffee began his University education studying Molecular & Cellular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 15, which culminated in attaining his MD from the Royal College of Surgeons.Dr. Chaffee is an All-American rugby player and a former professional athlete in England and America, having taken several years off from his education for the pursuit of sports between his undergraduate degree and medical school. Throughout his athletic career he saw first hand the monumental difference that diet makes to performance and recovery.Dr. Chaffee almost accidentally came across and practiced a fully carnivorous diet from age 20 to 25, having first learned of the toxic nature of plants during his University education. Since then he has rediscovered this truth and more and has dedicated many years and a large part of his professional practice to the study and education of diet and nutrition. He personally practices a fully carnivorous diet and currently resides in Perth, Australia where he does private consultations and clinics in functional medicine and nutrition. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon.
