Maria Kairouz | Coercive Control, Healing After Abuse & What It Means to Be Safe for Someone
The Organic Reflection PodcastShow Notes
This episode is being released during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month - May 2026. We are proud to be using our platform to keep this conversation going.
Our resident psychotherapist Maria Kairouz returns for round two and she doesn't hold back. In this conversation, Maria brings her lived experience as a domestic and family violence worker to the table and gets real about the questions most people are too afraid to ask. What is coercive control, and how do you know if you're experiencing it? What does safety actually look like in a relationship? And why are so many people choosing to stay in destruction rather than face the fear of leaving? This episode goes deeper than statistics. Maria explores how childhood conditioning quietly shapes the patterns we repeat in adulthood, why power and control always trace back to insecurity, and what it truly means to take accountability for your choices, whether you're the one who's been hurt, or the one doing the hurting. She speaks candidly about the healing journey after abuse, why leaving can feel more dangerous than staying, and what communities, men, and families can actually do to create safer spaces for everyone. This isn't a conversation about blame. It's about awareness, accountability, and the courage to do better. We speak about coercive control and emotional abuse, domestic and family violence statistics, the role of childhood trauma and conditioning, drugs, alcohol and unsafe environments, self-compassion and self-regulation, narcissism and manipulation, the healing journey, masculine vulnerability, and what safety truly means in relationships.

Dr Rita Trak’s story is one of grief, awakening, and a dentist who suddenly found herself working between two worlds. Rita had wanted to be a cosmetic dentist since she was 12. She was driven, studious and, by her own admission, running on autopilot, doing what she thought she knew best. She wasn’t spiritual. Neither was her Dad. Then he passed away unexpectedly. In this conversation, Rita opens up about the dream three weeks after his death, on what would have been his birthday, when he put a key in her heart. When she woke up, she could see and hear spirit for the first time in her life. She shares how that changed the way she practises dentistry, why she spent a year as a closet holistic dentist, and what happened when two dentists tried to buy her clinic so they could push her out. We also dive deep into the ideas behind her practice: why she walked away from fluoride after years of advocating for it, why she sees teeth as little time capsules that hold memory, how every tooth links to a pair of meridians and wisdom teeth link to four, and the patient whose X-ray looked like a bomb had exploded inside his tooth. This episode isn’t just about dentistry. It’s about what happens when the unseen world shows up in the middle of a clinical one, and you choose to listen. We explore losing her Dad and the dream that opened everything up, seeing and hearing spirit for the first time, going from strongly pro-fluoride to fluoride-free, hydroxyapatite and what to look for in a toothpaste, a dental chair surrounded by crystals, the interdimensional visitor and the symbols on her bathroom mirror, the patient she interrupted to say she could see his Dad, BPA in fillings and the problem with mercury removal, teeth as time capsules and the meridian connection, chipped teeth before weddings, school and loss, the bomb in the tooth and the Spotify moment that followed, why wisdom teeth might be the wisest of all, and what holistic really means when anyone can use the word. Today Dr Rita Trak is a holistic dentist, kinesiologist and medium, practising at Dental and Skin. She found her gift through grief, and now she’s changing what a visit to the dentist can feel like. Daniel Tadinac's story is one of crisis, clarity, and the moment a near-death experience handed him the life he was always meant to live. Growing up in Melbourne with three younger sisters, Daniel was always the kid who'd rather be outside than on a PlayStation - drawn to nature, movement and a different way of seeing the world. He just hadn't found his language for it yet.
Tyler Murphy's story is one of survival, resilience, and the fierce, unlikely path back to the self. Born to a single nineteen year old mum in Melbourne, Tyler had a childhood that looked ordinary from the outside until it wasn't. From the age of nine, he was sexually abused by someone close to the family, and the abuse continued for seven years. He buried it so deep he didn't connect it to anything until he was twenty-three.
Nick Lawson's story is one of running, searching, and the long road back to the self. He spent his teenage years terrified and performing, surrounded by violence and chaos, while quietly falling apart inside. When his father left at sixteen, the already shaky ground beneath him turned to sand. What followed was fifteen years of movement. In this conversation, Nick opens up about the heartbreak at nineteen that brought him to the edge, running barefoot across Africa in search of something he couldn't name, and the First Nations aunty who stopped him cold and asked, simply, where do you come from? He didn't know. That question sent him somewhere no passport could take him. We dive into the morning tea ceremony he has kept at 3am for years, the qigong practice that taught him to listen to his body, a four-day vision quest where death felt close enough to touch, and the meditation that finally handed him the truth about what happened to him as a three year old. It remains the most painful and most liberating moment of his life. This episode isn't just about one man's healing. It's about what becomes possible when you finally stop running and sit still long enough to meet yourself. Today Nick Lawson is a qigong teacher, ceremony keeper, and father — and one of the most quietly extraordinary humans we have ever had in the room.
Kaitlyn Menere's story is one of loss, avoidance, and the slow, hard won discovery that the body keeps score of everything we refuse to feel. Growing up in Melbourne with a classic Aussie upbringing, Kaitlyn's world looked completely ordinary until the day she was nineteen and her mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed was chemo, radiation and a double mastectomy. And then, at twenty, the day her mum went in for one final operation and simply didn't wake up. They were planning her twenty-first birthday party when it happened.
