EP13 - Primary Exam Roundtable Discussion | Nathan, San-Rene & Elliot | CT10
Count to 10 - Anaesthetic Primary PodcastShow Notes
We are back with the official launch of Season 2!! This is an amazing episode where I am joined by 3 candidates that have just passed the Primary Exam in 2023.1. Nathan, San-Rene and Elliot are so open and honest about the real struggles of sitting the Primary Exam and share their journey from the contemplative phase and study planning to the written exam and then finally the viva's. We explore some real challenges such as how to study for the exam while maintaining a normal family life and what it's like to bounce back and re-sit the exam. Confidence is a big theme in today's episode for success. At the end of the day this is just an exam, it's not bigger than life and that perspective should not be forgotten. I will be back in two weeks with our first 'mini-pod' covering 'Cardiac Action Potentials'. Thanks for listening! As always if you have any feedback let me know!

Today we are back with Robbie for part 2. My audio dropped out few times in our meeting so had to re-record a few parts (so the audio might sound different). We start by looking into MAC and its definitions (01:18). Then go and review the inhalational agents firstly looking at differences and similarities for pharmaceutic factors (07:38), PD factors (12:33), PK and toxic factors (21:42). The we review the past SAQs (28:47). These are big topics and my brain hurts but I hope you enjoy huge thanks to Robbie. Thanks for listening.
I'm back with another 'Live Practice Viva'. Thanks to Carl for doing this and best of luck for the exam!! I hope you get some technical and non-technical skills from the video. As per previous episodes we covered two topics which were: Uterotonics (02:52) and Cardiac Output Phenylephrine (07:52) We then go through some feedback. Hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching! As always if you have any feedback let me know at [email protected]
It's a jam-packed episode today as we start our new series on 'Inhalational Anaesthetics.' To help me cover the topic I'm joined by Robbie, fresh from passing (and smashing) the primary exam. We cover a lot today and my brain is fried after this episode. Strating off with MOA for inhalational agents (02:21), structure activity relationships (07:24) and defining the ideal inhalational agent (14:48). Then we delve into the ever confusion partition coefficients (16:21), wash-in kinetics (24:19), concentration and second gas effect (31:36) and wash-out kinetics (36:12). As always we end with a review of recent SAQs (40:40). This was a lot of fun and huge thanks to Robbie. Thanks for listening.
Today's episode completes our 'Gastrointestinal' Series. The topic today might be often overlooked but clinically is very relevant. I start by reviewing the physiology of swallowing (01:28) which lends itself nicely to factors preventing reflux of gastric contents (07:35). Then we examine the control of gastric motility and emptying (15:56) and the composition of gastric fluid as well (23:44). Our last LO looks at the physiology of nausea and vomiting (31:23). As always, we review the past SAQs to finish (34:40). Thank for listening.
It's been a bit of a break between episodes, but I have been on paternity leave. Today we start our new topic of 'Gastrointestinal Physiology' looking first at Liver Physiology. This is a big topic to cover and an equally important organ. I start with addressing the functional anatomy (01:43). Then this allows us to appreciate the many functions of the liver (06:48) followed by reviewing hepatic blood flow and the factors that control it (19:33). The last LO for today is assessing the laboratory investigation of the liver (31:52). Finally, we look at the previous SAQs (and cicm is really good for this!) (39:50). As always thanks for listening!
