Should Mammograms Start at 40? With Chemo Nurse Gemma Reeves

WomenKind Collective

Show Notes

This week on Spill The Tea with WKC, we’re joined by chemotherapy nurse Gemma Reeves, who has witnessed first-hand the heart-breaking rise of breast cancer in younger women. Gemma recently launched a petition calling for routine mammograms in the UK to begin at age 40 instead of 50 a campaign focused on earlier detection and saving lives. In a major step forward, the petition has now passed 100,000 signatures, meaning it must be considered for parliamentary debate. Currently, the NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women aged 50 to 70 for a mammogram every three years. Those guidelines are based on evidence reviewed by the UK National Screening Committee, which assesses when screening provides more benefit than harm. But with diagnoses increasingly affecting younger women, Gemma and many others are asking whether the current system is still fit for purpose. Breast cancer isn’t just statistics it’s our friends and family. Jinty lost her best friend to breast cancer at 43 after both of us found lumps at the same time. Jinty’s was benign. Hers wasn’t. That’s why conversations like this matter. In this episode we discuss: • What change Gemma is asking the government to make • What she’s seeing on the frontline of cancer care • Why the myth that younger women don’t get breast cancer is so dangerous • The symptoms women at any age should never ignore • How she carries the emotional weight of caring for patients while campaigning nationally Alongside this powerful conversation, we also take a lighter wander through the week, including a nostalgic look back at the public service adverts Gen X grew up watching, some wonderful collective nouns for groups of animals, and a delightful contribution from our dear friend Tom Read Wilson, who shares a collective noun for a group of menopausal women. Stay with us to the end for a little inspiration to carry you through the week. Midlife pivots, HRT patch glue and building Nudi spray, with Amy Simpson Link to Order Our Best Selling Book: Tackling Gender Bias in The Healthcare System. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 This week we spill the tea with Amy Simpson, a midlife entrepreneur and co-founder of Nudi Spray. She wasn't looking to start a business. She was just sick of scrubbing glue marks off her skin every time she peeled off an HRT patch. A dancer turned florist turned entrepreneur, Amy shares what it actually takes to pivot in midlife, and why you don't need to feel "business-shaped" to build something that works. In this episode we ask Amy: How did your dancing career start, and what was touring life like? Any favourite celeb stories? Was stepping back from dancing to raise your family a difficult decision? How did your eye for design develop through the florist and visual merchandising chapters? What was your own experience of menopause, and what was the moment the HRT patch glue became "there has to be a better way"? What did the learning curve look like when you're not a "business-shaped person", and what's been the hardest part of building a business from scratch? What did the Davina McCall call mean for you? What's it been like watching Nudi spread through word of mouth and social, and what's next? We are still on a high from our book launch, we talk a bit more about that and Jinty has found some interesting research on placenta’s and an erection after prostate cancer…! Stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week.

Link to Order Our Best Selling Book: Tackling Gender Bias in The Healthcare System. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 Today we are Spilling the Tea with Dr. Ravi Gill, a health psychologist who has spent over 15 years helping people navigate anxiety, depression and the mental load of physical health conditions, from early intervention services to older adult NHS care. She also trains organisations on mental health awareness and crisis management, and volunteers supporting people in emotional distress. Today we're talking anxiety: what it is, what it feels like, and why perimenopause can turn the volume up. In this episode: 1. What anxiety actually is: generalised anxiety vs "normal" worry, and the line between everyday stress and something that needs support. 2. What anxiety feels like in the body and where people notice it first. Many women are thought to have cardiac or gut issues when it's anxiety (or vice versa), so how can we tell the difference? 3. What’s happening in the brain when we're anxious, and why anxiety latches onto specific worries like health, money and relationships even when it's really about something broader. 4. Perimenopause and anxiety: why anxiety can appear for the first time, or come back with a vengeance. 5. What to do in the moment when anxiety spikes, plus the go-to grounding techniques Ravi actually recommends. 6. What does real progress looks like, whether anxiety can be managed long term, and when to see your GP rather than self-manage.

Today we're spilling the tea on how AI is affecting women, work, and happiness. Our guest is Giselle Goodwin, a self-help author, former business owner, and the woman behind Can Women Really Have It All? A Happiness Handbook for Working Mothers. But don't let the "self-help" label fool you, Giselle's approach isn't about "finding your inner goddess." It's honest, it's grounded in research, and it's backed by a PhD in women, work and wellbeing that she went back to university to complete after twenty years of running her own businesses. She's spent years asking one deceptively simple question: how can life actually be better for women? In this episode we talk about: • The "having it all" myth, the promise the 1980s sold women, and whether it ever delivered • How flexibility, hybrid working and micro-shifting can quietly become a trap for women at work • The basics of how AI is already affecting women's jobs, and which sectors are most at risk • Why AI's gender bias matters from AI safety and regulation to non-consensual AI-generated images of women and girls • Why Giselle calls the impact of AI on women the next "she-demic," and how worried we should be • The domestic gap nobody talks about and the research showing that when men do more at home, women are less depressed, arguments drop, and divorce risk halves • The three things Giselle would change tomorrow in policy, culture and technology to make work genuinely work for women
