Fantasy for the Ages

I Was WRONG About the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie!

Fantasy for the Ages

Show Notes

I completely dismissed Five Nights at Freddy’s when it hit theaters in 2023. Killer animatronics at a creepy old pizza restaurant? The trailers did absolutely NOTHING for me.

Well… apparently I was wrong.

In this spoiler-lite Fantasy for the Ages review, Jim finally checks out Five Nights at Freddy’s, starring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard—and discovers a horror movie that’s far more entertaining, creative, and surprisingly heartfelt than expected.

We’ll dig into what makes the movie work, including the wonderfully creepy animatronics, the mystery surrounding Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, some familiar actors in unexpected roles, and an excellent young performance from Piper Rubio. We’ll also talk about where the movie struggles, why its bizarre premise requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, and whether seasoned horror fans will actually find it scary.

And one important disclaimer: I’ve never played the Five Nights at Freddy’s video games. This review comes entirely from the perspective of someone experiencing this world for the first time through the movie.

So, can a horror movie about murderous pizza-restaurant mascots actually have charm and warmth?

Apparently YES.

And it surprised me enough that I immediately moved on to the sequel!

Have you seen Five Nights at Freddy’s? Were you already a fan of the games, or did you discover Freddy and the gang through the movie? Let me know what you thought in the comments!

A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that's brilliantly written... but absolutely MISERABLE to read?! Is it possible to recognize a book as a literary masterpiece while not particularly enjoying the experience? That's exactly the dilemma Jim faces in this spoiler-lite review of ANGEL DOWN, the 2025 historical fantasy/horror novel by Daniel Kraus!
