Brown Girl Self-Care

Outside Is Still Ghetto (But My Voice Is Valid)

Brown Girl Self-Care

Show Notes

After an extended hiatus, I'm back behind the mic!! I’m sharing the raw reality of navigating a major life transition at 50, dealing with the structural games of the "outside world," and wrestling with the deeply colonized fear that unless you are young, trendy, and constantly producing, your voice doesn't matter. Spoiler alert: It does matter. True, decolonized self-care isn't about performing wellness or waiting until your life is perfectly wrapped in a bow to claim your space. It’s about standing squarely in your "unknown" and choosing your purpose anyway. Lean in as we untangle what it means to practice liberation in real-time, right from the trenches. What We’re Unpacking In This Episode: The Reality of the Hiatus: Why I went silent for two months, and the vulnerability of questioning my validity in a digital age obsessed with youth and algorithms. "Outside is Still Ghetto": The logistics of taking a retail job for stability, navigating spaces that treat you like a number, and the sovereign act of collecting a paycheck without giving away your soul. The Universal Struggle for Meaning: Why checking external boxes will never fill an internal void, and how to find your anchor when your surroundings feel sparse or uncertain. The Reclaiming at 50: Why my mission to provide a space of encouragement and liberation for Black women doesn't pause just because I'm figuring out my own next steps.

This epside is for the eldest daughter who had to put her life and joy on hold to carry the weight of adult responsibilities on her shoulders. Ok, so I stand corrected. The writings shared weren't about "sensuality" per se, but Erotic as Power. I still suggest you read it when you have time to linger this month. Here it is: The Uses of the Erotic by Audre Lorde Also, join me on substack! Upgrade your free membership for $9/month to unlock private audios as well as the bookclub. I have a confession to make. A few days ago, my old survival brain started panicking about business metrics, and I frantically sat down to plan a massive, exhausting 90-day challenge. My plan was to force myself to show up on camera at 5:00 AM every single morning until the end of the year to feed the algorithm. That wasn't how I looked at it initially, but that's what it was. Let's talk about the trap of the "unintentional scramble"—how fear tries to trick us into running back to the hustle when we make space to be still/slow down/do less, and why the most radical thing a Black woman in her midlife can do right now is refuse to be a mule for the system. Put your phone on do-not-disturb, grab your tea, and let's talk about how we are going to unlabor and choose peace for the rest of this year. I'm writing more about rebuilding my life in my mid-life. Join me on Substack Putting on my auntie/much older sister hat on for this episode. Got a listener question recently from a young mother. She is working, about to go to school, and raising a young daugher on her own. On top of that the father of her child is "not the nicest." In her question she asks if things will ever get easier. You may be solo parenting, balancing an impossible load, or in the middle of a season where your energy is drained. This conversation is your reminder to remember your value and to also release the guilt you may be experiencing for decisions you made that didn't go as expected. Let's talk about protecting your peace around unhelpful co-parents, and practice practical "micro-self-care" when you have zero free time,
