The Dutch East India Company in the early 1600s have discovered there is money to be made in the Spice Islands of Indonesia. They send their new ship to the city of Batavia however it all goes wrong on the way there. This episode gives the context and set up to this incredible story.
In this episode we focus on Mawson as he heads back down to Antarctica on his Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Things don't go completely to plan as he explores an uncharted coast -- but he does find a pineapple and some oranges, so it's not all bad.
