Temple Barred Podcast – Episode 81: That Wasn’t in the Budget Welcome back to the Temple Barred Podcast with Jim Wynne and Philip Noone. This week, a bizarre encounter on the Luas kicks off an episode that takes us everywhere except a proper breakdown of the Irish budget! 🎸 THE GUITAR IS BACK! Phil recounts the saga of his missing €4,000 Taylor guitar, the unexpected kindness of strangers and the people who helped reunite him with his beloved instrument. From Dublin nightlife to gigging in Germany, we also hear how DJ Robin’s Layla went from an independent release to a massive German party anthem. 🎶 CREATIVITY & COLLAPSING DUALITIES Jim reveals an extraordinary burst of songwriting, producing 20–30 full songs in just a couple of weeks while his gigs have slowed down. Could losing one thing create space for something else? From creative flow to the unpredictable nature of success, we explore how life’s apparent setbacks can become unexpected opportunities. 🍻 SOBRIETY, ADDICTION & ESCAPE Are younger generations becoming more conscious of their relationship with alcohol and drugs? The lads discuss changing attitudes towards sobriety, cocaine becoming part of everyday life, energy drinks, dopamine and the deeper emotional struggles that can drive people towards addiction. Is treating the addiction enough, or do we need to understand the suffering underneath it? 🎻 MUSIC, NOSTALGIA & AULD LANG SYNE From the power of a live orchestra and the return of traditional hymns to Christmas FM, Fairytale of New York and the emotional weight of Auld Lang Syne, Jim and Phil explore how music connects us to our past, brings people together and sometimes reminds us of our loneliness. 🎃 HALLOWEEN, SYNCHRONICITIES & THE UNEXPLAINED With Halloween approaching, we discuss Ireland’s ancient traditions, harvest time, the cycle of death and rebirth, the thinning veil between worlds and the curious connections between consciousness, psychedelics and human behaviour. And in one of the episode’s central philosophical detours, Jim shares the idea behind a new song called All One and All Alone. If everything is ultimately one, can we ever truly be alone? Perhaps the contradictions we experience are simply different expressions of the same whole. Expect Irish humour, bizarre stories, musical tangents, controversial conversations and plenty of philosophical rabbit holes. 💬 Join the conversation: Have you ever found that a setback opened the door to something unexpected? What are your thoughts on sobriety and addiction? And when is it officially acceptable to start playing Christmas songs? The dualities are collapsing. Stay bold. ☘️ #TempleBarredPodcast #JimWin #IrishPodcast #Philosophy #Music
Episode 80 — Joe Maxi and the Hailers Philip loses his guitar. Jim loses the plot. And somewhere in Dublin, a taxi driver may unknowingly be sitting on the next great Temple Barred mystery. After a night involving a gig, David Bowie’s legendary drummer Woody Woodmansey, a taxi and an entire load of missing musical equipment, the boys follow the trail of CCTV, taxi numbers and unanswered questions. From there, the conversation goes everywhere: ADHD, ADHD medication, childhood, education, alcohol, coping mechanisms, trauma, spirituality, faith, luck and synchronicity. Jim and Philip also get deep into consciousness, spiritual awakening, DMT, meditation, breathing, the ego, the straw man fallacy and why we’re all so desperate to be right. There’s plenty of music chat too — Katy Tunstall, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and David Bowie — and the bizarre interconnected web of influence running through music and culture. And underneath it all is one question: Are the things that happen to us simply random… or are they all part of the same journey? ADHD, spirituality, consciousness, music, philosophy, Irish life, missing guitars and Joe Maxi and the Hailers. The Dualities are collapsing. Stay bold.
TEMPLE BARRED PODCAST — EPISODE 79 🐀 RAT IN MY KITCHEN The Dualities are collapsing… and apparently there was a rat living in Jim’s kitchen. 😂 After a little break, Jim & Phil are back — and they’ve got plenty to unpack. Jim tells the full story of the surprisingly intelligent rat that moved into his home, stole spaghetti, built a stash under the fridge and sent the whole house into lockdown. From rats and fear to becoming a granddad, the lads explore how even the things that frighten us can become opportunities to look inward. From there, the conversation takes a sharp turn into the recent controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran, Macklemore and political expression on stage, before widening into questions about Palestine and Israel, free speech, outrage, tribalism and the dangers of dehumanising anyone who sees the world differently. Then it gets even bigger… Immigration and Irish politics, Donald Trump and a United Ireland, the collapse of old Catholic/Protestant divisions, AI, nuclear weapons, power, fear and the possibility that humanity is heading towards a completely different form of communication. There’s also a wild Temple Bar story involving an American family, a dance floor, a camera and a holiday that took a very unexpected turn. 😂 And finally, the conversation comes back to the central theme running through it all: Are we acting from love or from fear? Identity, ego, addiction, death, consciousness, grief, the nature of reality and the idea that beneath all our roles, beliefs and labels, there is simply consciousness experiencing itself. A mad one. A deep one. A very Temple Barred one. The Dualities are collapsing. Stay bold. 🍀
Falling Slowly — Ego, Perspective, Fight or Flight & Choosing Love | Temple Barred Podcast #78 After a summer hiatus, Temple Barred is back for Season 3 — and the boys are straight back into the deep end. Episode 78 begins with a tribute to Glen Hansard, reflecting on his influence on Irish music, the connections he created across generations of musicians, and the unexpected ways music can leave a mark on our lives. From there, Jim Win and Philip Noone get into a much deeper conversation about ego, the “monkey mind”, self-awareness and the different versions of ourselves we become throughout life. They explore how unresolved experiences can manifest as tension, anger, resentment and anxiety, and how the body can hold onto things long after the mind has moved on. The conversation moves into fight-or-flight, social media algorithms and the way our feeds can distort our perception of reality, making the extremes seem far more representative of the world than they actually are. The lads also tackle perspective and polarisation — why we become so attached to our own opinions, why we assume people who disagree with us must be wrong, and why recognising that everyone sees the world through their own lens might be the beginning of something closer to harmony. They talk about past versions of ourselves, changing paths, addiction, judgement, forgiveness and meeting people where they are, before arriving at one of the central ideas of the episode: We all contain both light and darkness. The question is which part we choose to reflect back into the world. Plus plenty of the usual Temple Barred chaos — gig stories, The Commitments, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, Venom, aliens, Cape Fear, Irish trad musicians, questionable film recommendations and the search for a new producer for Season 3. From Glenn Hansard to the ego, from fight-or-flight to social media, from the paths we’ve taken to the people we’re still becoming — Falling Slowly is a conversation about change, perspective, acceptance and choosing love.
