The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reports a significant rise in threats against federal politicians, with nearly 800 incidents recorded in just six months. AFP Commissioner Chrissie Barrett highlighted that female MPs are particularly vulnerable, with three times more reports of sexualized or gender-based abuse. This alarming trend follows a recent attack on independent MP Helen Haynes, prompting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to consider enhanced protections for politicians and their staff. Former Liberal Minister Alan Tudge criticized the lack of prosecutions for such threats, calling for stricter penalties.

In political news, Prime Minister Albanese faces scrutiny over a $6 million grant to a local golf club, which he initially claimed would help prevent sewage overflow during floods. However, it was revealed that the sewage works were not included in the grant's scope, leading to accusations of misleading Parliament. Meanwhile, New South Wales Labor is bracing for potential losses in the upcoming election, with reports indicating that more than a dozen seats could fall to One Nation, as internal polling shows Labor's primary vote below 30%.

Australia's road safety record is also under fire, with a rising death toll on roads for six consecutive years, despite improvements in vehicle safety and infrastructure. Experts point to factors such as drug driving and increased risks to pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the government is facing backlash over its handling of serious sexual offenders, with critics arguing that current policies fail to prioritize community safety.

In sports, Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc delivered a stunning performance, taking six wickets in a crucial match against South Africa, showcasing the team's resilience despite earlier setbacks.
