Show Notes
For years I thought my subjective assessment was great, until I realised it wasn't.
This realisation came when I moved out of full-time sport and started doing more work in private practice.
The questions I was asking as part of my subjective assessment were basic.
They were basically the questions out of the textbook...
The subjective assessment questions were those same questions you probably ask...
The same ones we were both taught to ask at Uni and on placements. But they didn't give me the answers I needed.
The answers I need to make sense of my patient..
And specifically, the patients wants, needs and perceptions. I learnt this the hard way...
And I'd advise you not to make the same mistakes!
Learn how to deliver a better subjective assessment in this week's podcast episode!

I asked a question earlier this week on my socials...
Ever had a patient walk into your clinic with an injury you've never seen before… And suddenly felt like an imposter? In this episode, I explore why unfamiliar injuries can knock your confidence as a new grad physio... And more importantly, why falling back on the treatments and rehab exercises you already know doesn't always get the results you're looking for! I use a real-life case study as an example, to highlight the importance of clinical reasoning, about questioning your initial diagnosis, considering differential diagnoses, to help you adapt your rehab when a patient isn't improving. More importantly, I'll explain why you don't have to wait until you've seen an injury for the first time to start learning how to manage it. Enjoy the show! Andy Barker The New Grad Physio Mentor PS. If you're a final-year physio student or new grad looking to develop your clinical reasoning and become more confident managing complex or unfamiliar cases... Early in my career I never got this. But one of the biggest improvements in my own practice came when I understood I could have such a bigger impact with my patients... By simply asking better questions. In this episode, you'll discover why “getting out of pain” is rarely the real goal for any patient... And why understanding what they actually want will completely change your assessments, communication and rehab planning. And I'll give you three simple questions you should be asking every patient you see (questions that were not taught at Uni)! Enjoy the show! Andy Barker The New Grad Physio Mentor PS. It's one of the uncomfortable truths nobody tell you...
