Sandra Birchmore Was Scared of Her Apartment After Farwell Did This

True Crime Today | Daily True Crime News & Interviews

Show Notes

The day before she died, Sandra Birchmore told her therapist she was worried something would happen to her in her own apartment. Her texts from eight days earlier, already in evidence, describe Matthew Farwell asking for a key and looking in her closet. Federal prosecutors say the former Stoughton detective strangled Sandra in that apartment to keep her from reporting him. His lawyers say she took her own life, and on October 23rd they built that case from her words: a 2020 Facebook message, her mental health notes, and the Zoloft she'd started two weeks before. Robin Dreeke and I weigh that against her therapist, who says Sandra never reported suicidal thoughts and who had to call the State Police herself. The government plans to rest October 28th. Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr. killed six members of his own family at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, on November 13, 1974. His mother Louise, his father Ronald Sr., and his four siblings were each shot in their beds with a .35-caliber Marlin rifle. No neighbor reported hearing any of the eight shots. The family's cleaning woman, Linnea Nonnewitz, had worked in that house for five years. Louise DeFeo talked to her. Louise wanted to die, Linnea said afterward. And one day Louise told her this: "I'm preparing you. Something so tragic is going to happen." This is Part One of a three-part documentary on the DeFeo murders and the Amityville Horror. It covers June 1965 through November 13, 1974 — the house, the family, the nine years of violence under that roof, and the night Butch took the Marlin from his closet. Before the knife, there was a plan to get pregnant and use the baby as leverage. Before that, poison. Before that, arson. Before all of it, Gypsy Rose Blanchard had found Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating site and begun building a relationship through alter egos. By June 2015, the plan was a blade from a Walmart shelf. Gypsy texted him the night of June 9: "For motivation sake bring your A game hun." She painted her nails and unlocked the front door. When investigators arrived, a post on Dee Dee Blanchard's Facebook account had already told the world. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and received life without parole. Gypsy pleaded guilty and received ten years. She gained fourteen pounds in prison — her first real meals. Part two of the series covers the murder, both trials, and what a decade behind bars produced. The coroner hasn't ruled on Ken Urker's death, and the sheriff's office calls the investigation open, but Gypsy Rose says she already knows it wasn't suicide. Ken, the father of her daughter Aurora, was found dead in his Louisiana home on October 1st, his 34th birthday. Gypsy's first public answer was that she believed he overdosed and wasn't sure whether it was intentional. Three weeks later, with no new results announced, she updated her Kenan's Law petition to say she's 100 percent certain. Deputies found a holstered handgun, two shot glasses and a syringe on his nightstand. Gypsy says online bullying drove Ken to drugs and alcohol, while critics behind a Change.org counter-petition want her claims examined before they become legislation. Robin Dreeke and I break down the claim, the scene, and what it means for a little girl who now has one parent. In the Matthew Farwell trial, the people closest to Sandra Birchmore told investigators something was wrong, and on October 26, 2026, jurors heard what actually reached the doctor who ruled on her death. Sandra's longtime therapist, Diala Alkhalil, testified she never saw Sandra as actively suicidal and called State Police after she died. Friends and Sandra's hairdresser reached out to investigators too, according to earlier testimony. The medical examiner testified her office asked State Police for updates in 2021 and got nothing new to report. Five days later she ruled suicide. On cross-examination, Farwell's lawyer Joanne Daley took the therapist through Sandra's 2017 journal pages and a 2020 psychiatric hold. By January 2021, she testified, Sandra was texting her almost every day. I connect those calls to that email and to the man who sent it, State Police supervisor John Fanning. Farwell's twin brother returns to the stand October 27. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A filing attributed to Ian Pawlowski says Melani believed her husband, Brandon Boudreaux, "was no longer actually Brandon" and had to die as part of the Lord's plan. The same filing says she didn't think anyone would act on it. In October 2019, someone fired into Brandon's Tesla in Gilbert, Arizona. Melani, Lori Vallow Daybell's niece, has never been charged and says she knew nothing. Robin Dreeke and I go through her police interview the day after, when she wouldn't hand over Lori's or Alex Cox's numbers, and her testimony that one of Chad Daybell's claims checking out made her believe the rest. Weeks later she traveled with Lori and never heard JJ or Tylee on a single call. Could she really not have known?
