Filmi Ladies episode 187: Shashi Kapoor Birthday Special: Siddhartha and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid
Filmi LadiesShow Notes
No mere Merchant and Ivory for us: we're going much further afield with Siddhartha (1972), based on the Herman Hesse novel and directed by American Conrad Rooks, and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), directed and written by Brits Stephen Frears and Hanif Kureishi. These films have more in common than we thought, but one of them is much less irritating than the other.
Either way, these are films that only Shashi Kapoor could have done, and we are so glad he gave them a try. What a career!
Both films are available on Youtube! Watch Siddhartha here https://youtu.be/OrH8BMVs0LM?si=A46CxoX3xtzpYDvc and Sammy and Rosie here https://youtu.be/kRsm1jGjScs?si=AA31zKimYXpyu8eK.

More from Filmi Ladies
Is it true in your corner of filmi fandom that people just don't talk about Mala Sinha much? That's our experience, so we were glad to take this opportunity to look at her filmography. Pitu watched Hariyali Aur Rasta and Beth watched the Bengali film Khelaghar. However, we've walked away with as many questions as we had at the start: what is her unique set of skills and strengths? What are the major forces in her roles and personas? Does she have a jodi you particularly like? And as always, what are her must-see films for you?
Happy Rekha Divas to all who celebrate! Our queen turned 72 a few days ago (October 10—get it on your calendar, mortals!) so we decided to celebrate her IDGAF era with two controversial films she starred in: Kamasutra (1996) and Aastha (1997). Have you seen either? What are your thoughts?
We recently watched Lust Stories 3 and enjoyed it a lot! Have you seen this anthology? What are your thoughts? Do you agree with Pitu that the third segment is a little too talky and a little too long? Do you agree with Beth that the appearance of Konkona Sen Sharma solves everything?Click here to see our episode on Lust Stories 2.https://youtu.be/pwhdWVNwgMs?is=vf5gi_DZ83goQXDUSubscribe to Filmi Ladies on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/7Ib9C1X5ObvN18u9WR0TK9 or Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/filmi-ladies/id1642425062@filmiladies on Instagram Pitu is @pitusultan on InstagramBeth is @bethlovesbollywood on BlueskyEmail us at filmiladies at gmailSee our letterboxd for everything discussed on this podcast. https://boxd.it/qSpfyOur logo was designed by London-based artist Paula Ganoo @velcrothoughts on Instagram https://www.art2arts.co.uk/paula-vaughan
She is wicked and stunning, a fashionista and a scheming paisewali, and we love her to bits!
Dor completes 20 years! Such a sweet, heartwarming film about friendship, and women supporting each other despite harrowing circumstances. Have you seen Dor? What are your thoughts?
