Why Tama Potaka Can’t Vote for Himself This Election

Something for the People

Show Notes

9 days out from the election e te whānau! Have you voted yet?Today, we’re joined by Tama Potaka, National MP for Hamilton West and Minister for Māori Development, Whānau Ora, Māori Crown Relations and Conservation. With responsibilities spanning Māori wellbeing, whenua, housing and Crown-Māori relations, Tama has plenty to answer for when it comes to the decisions being made in Parliament. We get into some of the big political issues facing Māori right now, from the Treaty Principles Bill and National’s approach to gangs, to Māori land development and the relationship between the Kiingitanga and the Crown. We also ask some tougher questions. What’s it really like being a Māori Minister in a National-led Government? What happens when he disagrees with his own party? What has actually changed for whānau Māori under his leadership? And can he balance his responsibilities as a Minister with his connections to te ao Māori?Plus, why is he on the Māori roll when he represents a general electorate? Make it make sense. 😂Plenty to wānanga in this one, e te whānau! What do you make of Tama’s answers? Let us know below. 👇🏽#S4TP #SomethingForThePeople #TamaPotaka #MāoriPolitics #NZPolitics

We're putting our panel to the test with a new wero: Create a policy that would make a real difference for the people of Aotearoa.Sounds easy enough, right? Not quite!Hinurewa, Chey and Kereama must explain what problem their policy solves, who it would benefit, how much it would cost and, most importantly, where the money would come from. Then comes the hard part... defending their ideas when the rest of the panel starts asking the tough questions. 🔥Will their policies stand up to scrutiny, or will they fall apart under pressure? If you could introduce ONE new policy in Aotearoa, what would it be? Let us know below!#S4TP #SomethingForThePeople #NZ #Politics #Māori

Should 16-year-olds be allowed to vote? Should the wealthy pay more tax? And was it okay for politicians to visit a gang pad to win votes?Joined again by two rangatahi Māori who have plenty to say about te ao tōrangapū: Taane Aruka Te Aho and Te Horowai Mapapalangi. We're putting some of the big political questions to our S4TP panel, and there's only two ways to answer... One supports Te Pāti Māori, the other supports National. 👀Kua piri mai a Te Horowai Mapapalangi rāua ko Taane Aruka ki te pae! With the election just weeks away, we've bought two rangatahi Māori with different political perspectives together for a wānanga about politics, voting and the issues that matter to them.We get into the Māori Roll versus the General Roll, the role of rangatahi in politics, and whether our political system is doing enough to engage the next generation. With over 73,000 rangatahi Māori not enrolled to vote, we also explore the importance of having a say and whose responsibility it is to encourage more young Māori to get involved.🗳️ The enrolment deadline is this Sunday 25 October!
