Functional Versus Mechanical Alignment in Total Knee Arthroplasty
The Journal of Arthroplasty’s: The CutShow Notes
The Journal of Arthroplasty: The Cut brings you another very special episode based on Knee Society Proceedings that highlight important research about knee arthroplasty. In this episode of The Cut, our host Kim K. Tucker, MD speaks with our guest Simon W. Young, MD, FRCS about the John N. Insall award-winning study on Functional Versus Mechanical Aligment in Total Knee Arthroplasty.
Mechanical alignment (MA) in total knee arthroplasty is regarded as a gold standard; however, some patients report dissatisfaction postsurgery. Functional alignment (FA) is a potential alternative, integrating kinematic alignment (KA) principles with preresection bone balancing within defined boundaries. In this prospective, randomized controlled trial in robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty, interesting results were uncovered.

The Journal of Arthroplasty: The Cut brings you another very special episode based on Hip Society Proceedings that highlight three studies that define current state of hip arthroplasty.
The Journal of Arthroplasty: The Cut brings you another very special episode that focuses on the operating room. In this episode, we’ll be discussing how we navigate the moments in total hip arthroplasty when things don’t go exactly as planned. Although we spend a great deal of time in arthroplasty on pre optimization, challenges are inevitable, even in well selected patients. But we’ll look at how we respond during those moments that ultimately define the outcomes.
The Journal of Arthroplasty: The Cut brings you a very special episode on a topic that we rarely discuss – the surgeon. In this episode, our hosts Kim Tucker, MD and Carlos A. Higuera-Rueda, MD, FAAOS speak with our highly accomplished guests Peter A. Gold, MD and Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA on the topic of “physician burnout” that’s garnering a fair amount of attention in recent months. So, how do we preserve the surgeon to avoid burnout when in modern times surgeons are no longer just surgeons but clinicians, technicians, administrators and team leaders and often in the same day.

In this episode of The Cut, our hosts Kim K. Tucker, MD and Nathanael D. Heckmann, MD welcomed guests Craig J. Della Valle, MD, George J. Haidukewych, MD and Rafael J. Sierra, MD to discuss three different papers focusing on dual mobility, constrained liners and trends.
