The School of Life

How to Shield Ourselves

The School of Life

Summary

The discussion highlights the psychological complexities individuals face in intimate relationships, particularly how early experiences shape their ability to recognize danger or untrustworthiness in close partners. Many people, despite being competent and shrewd in other areas of life, may find themselves vulnerable and naive in personal relationships due to past traumas. This inability to acknowledge unpleasant truths often stems from childhood survival mechanisms, where recognizing a caregiver's harmful behavior was psychologically unfeasible.

The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding and compassion for those who struggle with these dynamics. It suggests that these individuals are not inherently weak or foolish; rather, they have learned to suppress their instincts to protect themselves from emotional pain. The journey to reclaiming one's ability to set boundaries and expect kindness from loved ones can be a long and challenging process, often requiring a reevaluation of past experiences and relationships.

Emotional Intelligence, Daily. Start now: https://www.theschooloflife.com/subscription/ Why do highly capable people become powerless in intimate relationships? This film explores the paradox of individuals who are shrewd in public but unable to protect themselves in love. We trace this pattern to a childhood survival mechanism, where unwarranted innocence was necessary to cope with uncaring caregivers, preventing them from seeing or defending against private danger. #Psychology #SelfProtection #Relationships #TraumaHealing #EmotionalSafety Unlock all the content of The School of Life with a subscription to our podcast, articles, videos, and exercises, specially tailored to your needs. “There are people who, in most walks of life, are extremely canny and highly able to look after themselves. They may be shrewd in business, undaunted in social encounters, and vociferous in defending their causes in public. And yet, in other situations, these very same people can find themselves sharply and strangely unable to protect their own interests. This is one of the more subtle effects of childhood trauma in adulthood.

The situations in which these people become powerless, innocent, unworldly and too pure for their own good are intimate ones. In close relationships, the years seem to fall away from them. They find themselves in a couple and lose any ability to imagine that their partner might be anything other than ‘very nice’ and ‘on their side’. Other people may spot a problem at once; in their eyes, all is completely well until it is far, far too late…”

Everyone assumes that they are the only one to be freakish. In fact, of course, it’s very normal to be abnormal.

Sometimes we may end up in a couple where we spend a lot of time complaining - to concerned friends and family - that the other person is evidently and committedly ‘afraid of intimacy.’ They don’t often talk of their emotions; they may find it hard to be physically cosy; they don’t cry so often.
