Joy Nason was born into the Exclusive Brethren, the group that now calls itself the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC), and it shaped every part of her early life, from her friendships and family to the way she saw the world. In her twenties she walked out, and she paid the price every ex-member knows. Her family and friends were cut off from her, and the only community she had ever known closed its doors behind her.She built a life anyway. Joy made a successful career and a future on her own terms, and for years she kept her head down and got on with it. What pulled her back in was the hypocrisy. She was raised being told that government is ordained by God and that Brethren don't vote, so when she learned the Brethren had been giving money to political parties, she couldn't let it go.That's what led her to write Joy and Sorrow (2015), her memoir about growing up inside the group, getting out, and living with the loss of her family. Since then she has kept speaking out about the harm the PBCC's practices do to people and families, and she's become a voice for a lot of ex-members who haven't been able to tell their own stories. She is actively involved in politics and does whatever she can to try and show what this sect is really about.
