Everybody Knows But Me

Episode 7 - The One Where Gabrielle Moss Escapes The Parent Trap

Everybody Knows But Me

Show Notes

A lot of you probably think your parents are a little annoying, or even kinda overbearing. But how far would they have to go for you to decide to cut them off completely? Growing up, that was a question writer Gabrielle Moss had no idea she could even consider, because it seemed like there was no limit to the toxic behavior her mom and dad were willing to exhibit. Then, as she outlined in her mega-viral 2018 article for Bustle, one day Gabrielle decided enough was enough, and immediately felt freer than she ever had in her life before. Gabrielle joins Holly to remind everyone that a relationship being important doesn’t automatically make it healthy. And when the person crossing your boundaries is the person you’ve been taught you're never supposed to walk away from…you definitely still can.

Comedian Lisa Wallen and Holly have a lot in common: alcoholic dads, complicated childhoods, and an ability to make a joke at the worst possible time. But Lisa’s life changed forever when her fiancé, John, disappeared. She joins Holly to talk about what happened, becoming the target of internet strangers while she was grieving, and the surprising way tragedy reshaped her relationship with her dad.

This mission, if you choose to accept it, is unlike any EKBM mission we’ve had before…and it’s top secret.

You asked, we answered - this week is all listener stories, and you really came through with the wildest sibling revelations, secret family drama and EKBM level dysfunction that made us all collectively Home Improvement grunt. Holly and partner-in-crime Producer Pete read them aloud with licensed therapist, author, and creator of The Siblinghood Theory, Minaa B. Together, the three of us dig into the stories you’ve been sending us all year. Minaa is here to help us understand what might actually be happening underneath them all, and Pete and Holly are your proxies - just two little rascals and silly billies who cope through jokes.

Award-winning journalist, podcast host, and digital activist Bridget Todd has spent years examining how technology shapes our lives. Then in 2025, within an incredibly short period of time, Bridget’s mom died suddenly and she became a caregiver for her seriously ill dad. She was grieving, overwhelmed, and suddenly responsible for navigating an endless list of medical, insurance, and caregiving decisions. And that’s when an AI critic turned to AI. Bridget’s experience inspired her new audiobook, Love at First Prompt: AI and the Future of Intimacy , which investigates something that sounds like science fiction but is very much already here: people turning to AI for romance, friendship, therapy, companionship and emotional support. And she joins Holly to talk about losing the people you love, wondering who would actually show up for you in a crisis, and finding yourself reaching for comfort somewhere you NEVER thought you would.
