160| Introduction to Neuropsychological Test Interpretation and Regression-Based Norms – A Conversation With Dr. Andrew Kiselica
Navigating NeuropsychologyShow Notes
Today we give you our conversation with Dr. Andrew Kiselica about neuropsychological test interpretation. Andrew is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and Associate Professor in the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Georgia. He recently first authored a review paper providing clinically relevant guidance regarding neuropsych test interpretation. In the paper they cover a variety of specific topics such as regression based norms, multivariate base rates, and within-person variability, among others. In our conversation with Andrew, we covered most of these individual topics and we are going to break this one up and release it in chunks, with each episode reflecting a different topic. Today's topic is an overall introduction to neuropsychological test interpretation and then a specific conversation about regression based norms. This conversation explores nutritional cognitive neuroscience, an interdisciplinary field examining the bidirectional relationships among nutrition, cognition, brain health, and eating behavior. The discussion covers how dietary influences operate across biological, psychological, environmental, and sociocultural levels, including neuroplasticity, inflammation, reward processes, genetics, and access to healthy foods. It reviews emerging research on nutrient profiles, the gut–brain axis, and dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets, while emphasizing that evidence for isolated supplements or "brain foods" is often limited or overstated. The conversation also highlights substantial individual variability in nutritional needs. For neuropsychologists, the central takeaway is to address nutrition as one component of broader brain health, provide measured and realistic guidance, and collaborate with qualified nutrition professionals when individualized recommendations are needed.
