Water Security : What's working on KI - Be Summer ready

In Your Paddock Podcast

Show Notes

What would you do if there was no water to buy, no mains, no bore to fall back on, and destocking wasn't an option? On Kangaroo Island, that's not a hypothetical. Hear how one farming family drought-proofed their property, and what every Hills and Fleurieu farmer can learn before summer arrives. Alice heads across to Kangaroo Island to talk with Jo Sullivan from the KI Landscape Board and Christine Berry from Deep Dene farm about water security and what's actually working on-farm: bigger and deeper dams, solar-pumped reticulation, troughs in every paddock, telemetry that flags leaks, and how salinity and evaporation creep up when the dams run low. We also cover what Hills and Fleurieu farmers can borrow from KI, and why the best time to plan for the next drought is right now, while the dams are full. This is a strong foundation for our upcoming episodes and workshops around farm innovation, feed and water budgetting, containment feeding - all of which depend on reliable, good-quality water. It is also a great lead-in for our Barossa Pasture and Water Innovation Bus Tour on Thurs 15th Oct, see the EventBrite link for more details. In this episode of In Your Paddock, Alice sits down with agricultural consultant and PhD candidate Megan Willis, and Mount Compass producer Simon Patterson. We unpack the science behind virtual fencing, the practical realities of using it in the paddock, and how liveweight data can help producers improve productivity and grazing efficiency. Simon shares his experience converting a 65 ha ex‑vineyard into productive grazing country using multi-species cover crops and virtual fencing, while Megan brings 20 years of research insights into welfare, behaviour and technology adoption. A grounded, honest conversation about what works, what doesn’t, and what farmers should consider before dipping a toe into AgTech.
