Summary
The review of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" reveals strong criticism from the reviewer, who considers it one of the worst entries in the Marvel franchise. The reviewer expresses disappointment over the decision not to recast the character T'Challa after the passing of Chadwick Boseman, arguing that the character was underdeveloped and that the choice to kill him off was a narrative misstep. The reviewer also finds Shuri, the new Black Panther, to be an inadequate replacement, citing her physicality and acting skills as lacking.
Additionally, the portrayal of Namor is criticized for being boring and miscast, with the reviewer feeling that the character's design did not align with expectations. While the attempt to incorporate real-world Mayan culture is acknowledged, the execution is deemed ineffective. The review highlights a lack of engaging plot elements and character development, particularly for Riri Williams, who is described as poorly cast and uninteresting.
On the technical side, the 4K release is praised for its visual and audio quality, but the bonus features are seen as disappointing, lacking depth and missing a tribute to Boseman. The reviewer ultimately assigns a grade of D to the film, A to the steelbook design, and D to the bonus features, resulting in an overall grade of C- for the release.
Show Notes
On this episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, I'm revisiting Marvel Studios' BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022) with a retro review of the Disney 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook release.
Following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, director Ryan Coogler faced an almost impossible task: continue the story of Wakanda without the actor who brought King T'Challa to life. The result is one of the most emotional and ambitious entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film that balances grief, legacy, political conflict, and superhero spectacle.
Starring Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía, BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER introduces the underwater kingdom of Talokan and its powerful ruler, Namor, while exploring how Wakanda moves forward after the loss of its king.
But now that a few years have passed since its theatrical release, how well does the movie hold up?
In this retro review, I'm taking another look at the film's story, performances, action, emotional impact, and place within the MCU. I'm also discussing the 4K UHD physical media release, including its presentation and collectible SteelBook packaging.
