Summary
Lariat, Mela, and Dala journey deeper into the forest, discussing the history of their city, Ness, and the legendary wizard Pietro. Lariat reveals that Pietro, a powerful wizard, had once driven away other wizards to protect Ness from their ambition for power, specifically mentioning the Day of the Dragons when wizards learned to transform into dragons. The conversation turns to Prosper, who has lost his memories and may be possessed by Pietro's spirit, prompting concern about his fate at the hands of Treville, a rival wizard.
As they approach a wizard's inn, Lariat expresses hope that they can gather information about Prosper's whereabouts. Mela and Dala express skepticism about Lariat's reliability, noting inconsistencies in his stories about the dragon that taught wizards the transformation spell. Despite their doubts, they agree to follow Lariat's lead, as he claims to have friends who can help them navigate the dangers ahead.
Meanwhile, Rafe and Cray arrive in Goutland, where they face the harsh realities of starvation affecting the city. Lord Wilhelm confronts them about the food shortage and demands to know where Goutland's supplies come from. Cray offers to seek food from the southern hills, while Rafe proposes a plan to return to Ness for supplies, emphasizing the importance of Pietro's journals. They are granted a small caravan of wagons to undertake this perilous journey, with Rafe determined to ensure the citizens do not starve.
In the Old Quarter, Elle encounters Bink, a member of the Thieves' Guild, who reveals that a dwarf named Kray is in the area. Intrigued by the guild's operations and the potential for alliances, Elle shares her intent to find Kray. Bink's insights into the guild's structure and its history pique her interest, leading her to reconsider her own motives and plans.
