Could LIGO Find GIANT Alien Spacecraft?

PBS Space Time

Summary

Recent research explores the potential for detecting gravitational waves generated by hypothetical alien spacecraft, termed "Ramacraft." This concept arises from the capabilities of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), which has successfully observed merging black holes and neutron stars. The study, led by Luke Sellers and his team, speculates on the conditions under which a massive, rapidly accelerating spacecraft could produce detectable gravitational waves.

The paper highlights that while LIGO is designed to detect waves from massive astronomical events, it raises the question of whether other sources, such as advanced alien technology, could also create observable signals. The researchers calculate the mass and acceleration required for a spacecraft to generate waves within LIGO's sensitive frequency range. They conclude that an object with the mass of a planet, accelerating to a significant fraction of the speed of light, could potentially be detected if it were close enough to Earth.

Although the idea of such advanced alien technology remains speculative, the research emphasizes the importance of considering unconventional sources of gravitational waves. The findings suggest that while the likelihood of detecting Ramacraft is slim, the methods developed could help identify other astrophysical phenomena that might produce similar gravitational signals. The study serves as a reminder of the vast unknowns in the universe and the potential for new discoveries in gravitational wave astronomy.

Whenever we open a new window on the universe, we discover things that no one expected. Our newfound ability to measure ripples in the fabric of spacetime—gravitational waves—is a very new window, and so far we’ve seen a lot of wild stuff. We’ve observed black holes colliding, and their oddly high masses challenges our understanding of black hole formation and growth. We’ve seen colliding neutron stars that have forced us to rewrite our ideas of how many of the elements of the periodic table get made. But what else might be hiding in the ripples’ of spacetime? Oh, I know: how about the gravitational wakes caused by planet-sized alien spacecraft accelerating to near light speed.

Industrialization was finally improving quality of life for a lot of us, science was making incredible bounds, and our sights were set on the stars. It seemed to many that we were on a trajectory to a space-faring technological utopia. The United Federation of Planets was just around the corner. But the possibility of a much darker space age also loomed: one in which the space around the Earth became highly militarized, and in fact massively weaponized.Written and Hosted by Matt O’Dowd Produced by Rusty WardGraphics by Kurt RossAssistant Editing and Sound Design by Mike PetrowMade by Kornhaber Brown (www.kornhaberbrown.com)Comments answer by Matt:RosieisaBosshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z12wdnazlyb0dtblw22fhbgb4lmrvfrleNicholas Aiellohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13rcftxeprthjkmc22cstaploneybp2sZach Crawfordhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13kd3wg4v3tx1xvo23jwrwzrorah5jfaNuclearCraft Modhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z13xurhbopmywd4ue22lvzujjnm4cpifjLophathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z12bhbf4irfzfxqw204chxarfyncfdqgbng0kOnlyNameLeftHerehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ1WZ-eJW8Y&lc=z130j5qprnr2up0tj23us1qrqxyeyhr3zSpecial thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangCoolAsCatsShane RobinsonDavid NicklasEugene LawsonJoshua DavisQuasarTambe BarsbayMax LevineMayank M. We expect the most fundamental machinery to have the fewest possible moving parts – or free parameters. This is why the standard model of particle physics is considered incomplete. Its equations predict many things with stunning accuracy, but they first require us to tune many mathematical knobs and dials. We need to use physical measurement to fix 19 free parameters like the masses of particles. And then there’s gravity, which doesn’t fit into the standard model at all. So surely there exists a deeper set of cogs and wheels – a theory that brings all observable phenomena into the same mechanical framework. That would be a theory of everything, and this is the great hope of string theory.Special thanks to our Patreon Big Bang, Quasar and Hypernova Supporters: Big BangJustin LloydAnton LifshitsCoolAsCatsDavid NicklasFabrice EapJuan BenetQuasarDean FuquaJames FlowersMark RosenthalRoman PinchukTambe BarsbayVinnie FalcoHypernovaChuck ZegarDan HarrisDonal BotkinEdmund FokschanerJohn HofmannJordan YoungJoseph SalomoneMartha HuntMatthew O’ConnorRatfeastThanks to our Patreon Gamma Ray Burst Supporters: Alexander RodriguezAlexey EromenkoBrandon CookBrandon LabonteDaniel LyonsDavid CraneFabian OlesenFauzan ArdhanaGreg AllenGreg WeissJack FroschJames HughesJJ BagnellJon FolksJoseph EmisonJosh ThomasKevin WarneMalte UblMark VasileNathan LenizNicholas RoseNick VirtueScott GossettShannan CatalanoShawn AzmanTommy Mogensenسلطان الخليفي Learn more about your ad choices.
