When I was thirteen, I used to sleep at my best friend’s house almost every weekend. Then I started waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the same woman on the ceiling. She would crawl slowly above the bed, smile down at me, and hold one finger to her lips like she was telling me to stay quiet. Eventually, I started hearing her bare feet running across the hardwood floor. I never told anyone. I just stopped sleeping there. For years, I convinced myself it had all been a nightmare. Then I moved into my first apartment at eighteen. And she came back. Only this time, she wasn’t on the ceiling anymore.
