Business in Between

Show Notes

Welcome to the first new episode of Business in Between... it's our new series, on our new podcast channel, that features long-form chats with NZ's most interesting business minds. This week we're getting business lessons from Matt Stark. For those outside of Hamilton, Matt could be described as a super successful business buyer, builder, investor and leader. For those inside of Hamilton - Matt Stark is the guy transforming the city. With his team at Stark property he's built, innovated and designed many of Kirkiroa's most impressive developments. He's responsible for the Riverbank Lane Project and the Tristram Precint, Panama House, The HIlls Development, South Block. And he’s also our landlord for our own office at MADE in Hamilton East! In the words of Mike Neale, Harcourts Hamilton's managing director 'his impact is everywhere you look'. In this episode we learn why he left school at 16 to pursue a building apprenticeship, how he lost it all in the GFC, his lawn mowing business, the role his wife Jamie has played in it all, personal values, $100 million dollar deals, lifting Hamilton's gaze, and why transforming the city is important to him. Matt is a private guy, and this is the first time he's shared his story in detail - and his first podcast. And we love it - Matt is such a humble, thoughtful, likeable guy - and we learned a lot in this one. If you enjoy this episode, please follow Business in Between in your podcast app - and share with a friend. This week on Accidental Business Owners we talk about one of the hardest decisions we've made so far in business – which just happens to be shutting this channel down. 2024 has been such a massive year for Seamus, Di and I – and a few weeks ago we had a pretty intense end-of-year strategic advisory session. It got pretty real, pretty fast – and what we all realized was that we'd taken on too much – and in order to create a sustainable future - needed to find ways of cutting back. Or as Di would say, we needed to go slow, to go fast. This conversation is all about how, and why, we arrived at the decision to shut down our Business in Between channel. It was recorded on a Saturday morning, at the tail end of the busiest week of our year – and there was a little bit of tension in the air. It was a real marker of a moment in time. The good news is we're keeping the best bits of the channel – and this show Accidental Business Owners will live on over on our Between Two Beers channel. For everyone that has joined us on this Business channel this year- thank you for all your support. We've loved the ride. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. This is something a bit different. We're talking about the business of poker. Our guest Chris Moorman is one of the most successful poker players of all time. He has won over $42 million dollars playing cards and is widely considered to be the best online tournament player ever, but he's also crossed over successfully into live tournaments – winning over $1 million on three separate occasions. At one point, Moorman was also one of the biggest 'backers' in the online poker scene, and tells the incredible story of how some amateur money-management and sloppy decision-making cost him around $3 million. Chris is a poker legend; and in this one we hear all the most incredible stories from his 15 years as a poker pro - and how he turned his talent into a business. This conversation was recorded in July of 2022, and first published on the Between Two Beers Podcast channel. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Business in Between our podcast channel, that features long-form chats with some of NZ's most interesting business minds. This week we hear from Simon Graafhuis who is the CEO of the Chiefs Rugby Club about the business of sport. Before taking the top job, Simon was a Board Member at the Chiefs and spent 18 months as the Interim Chair. All while he was also holding down the role of the Chief Financial Officer at Gallagher Group, where he had spent 14 years building his corporate knowledge after previous finance roles within the dairy industry. Simon is also a small business owner with his start up craft beer operation Bootleg Brewery who were one of the first supporters of the Between Two Beers Podcast. His thoughtful insights into the business of rugby make for interesting listening as the national sport fights to stay relevant in a congested entertainment market. And he takes us behind the scenes of the Chiefs who are one of the few in New Zealand to weave Te Ao Māori concepts into the values and behaviours of the organisation. One that we were privileged to enter earlier this year to see firsthand. Enjoy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Marc Ellis was always a dream guest for us, and he delivered the goods in our original episode recorded back in early 2023! It’s been our most popular episode to date and if you listen back to the conversation in its entirety you’ll understand why. His unpredictable brand of hijinks and gags came to life after years out of the spotlight, and his infectious personality rubbed off on us both. But behind the laughs and wild stories is an incredibly driven, successful, thoughtful guy. Marc said that his life can be viewed in chapters and he’s probably done enough in his life to have a podcast episode dedicated to each. He played rugby for Otago, North Harbour, the Blues, the Highlanders and the All Blacks, then he crossed codes to rugby league to play for the Warriors and Kiwis; after sport he was one of New Zealand’s top television stars for over a decade with Matthew Ridge, before fading into anonymity. For this episode of Business in Between we focus on the chapter dedicated to the story behind the rise of Charlie’s Juice – which Marc co-founded and eventually sold to Asahi for $129 million after 10 years in business. We pick up the conversation with Marc talking about what life looks like for him now. There's still an exciting opportunity available to sponsor this channel, if this interests you, please get in touch.
