The Pike County Massacre – Episode Two: The House of Wagner

For more than two years, investigators searched for the people responsible for one of the most shocking mass murders in modern American history. The evidence was painstakingly collected, hundreds of interviews were conducted, and countless theories—from drug cartels to family feuds—were examined. Yet as detectives slowly assembled the pieces, one family kept appearing at the center of the puzzle.

The Wagners.

In this second episode, Carolyn Ossorio follows the investigation as law enforcement begins narrowing its focus to a family that, from the outside, appeared hardworking, successful, and deeply devoted to one another. But behind that carefully maintained image was a rigid hierarchy led by Angela Wagner—a mother whose influence over her husband and sons has become one of the most unsettling aspects of the case. As investigators dug deeper, they uncovered a family dynamic defined by loyalty, control, and an unwavering belief that blood came before everything else. Prosecutors would ultimately argue that this culture of obedience helped lay the groundwork for an unimaginable crime.

This episode explores the custody dispute involving Hanna Rhoden and Jake Wagner, the mounting evidence that began pointing investigators toward the Wagner family, and the painstaking detective work that transformed suspicion into one of the largest criminal investigations in Ohio history. We also examine how years of planning, digital evidence, forensic breakthroughs, and witness interviews gradually dismantled the appearance of an ordinary Appalachian family.

As the circle tightens around the Wagners, one question begins to overshadow every other:

Was this simply a custody battle that spiraled into violence—or had an entire family convinced themselves that murder was the only acceptable solution?

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF THE MURDAUGH RETRIAL: NEW DNA, MISSING EVIDENCE & UNANSWERED QUESTIONS Could new forensic evidence change the course of one of America's most sensational murder cases? The Alex Murdaugh saga is far from over. After his 2023 convictions for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were overturned, the disgraced South Carolina attorney is preparing for another murder trial. But as prosecutors and defense attorneys prepare to return to the courtroom, new developments are raising questions about the evidence, the investigation, and what the jury may hear this time around. In this episode of Criminal Mischief, host Carolyn Ossorio breaks down the latest developments in the Murdaugh case, including unidentified male DNA discovered beneath Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails, newly authorized forensic testing, and the lingering mystery of the murder weapons and clothing that investigators never recovered. The defense is also raising questions about a possible secret grand jury proceeding and allegations surrounding potentially concealed evidence. But how much of this represents genuinely new information, and how much is legal maneuvering ahead of a high-stakes retrial? Carolyn examines what the evidence actually establishes, what remains disputed, and whether these developments could alter the prosecution's case against Murdaugh. In this episode: • The latest developments ahead of Alex Murdaugh's murder retrial. • Unidentified male DNA beneath Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails and what additional testing could reveal. • The missing murder weapons and unrecovered clothing. • Questions surrounding a possible grand jury investigation and disputed evidence. • The defense's strategy and the challenges facing prosecutors. • What comes next as one of America's most closely watched criminal cases returns to court. The original convictions were overturned because of jury interference, not a finding that Murdaugh was innocent. The new DNA evidence has not established the involvement of another killer, and allegations raised by the defense remain unproven. The evidence may be changing. The questions are multiplying. And the next chapter of the Murdaugh case could be every bit as consequential as the first. THE MURDER OF STEVEN COZZI The Tomasz Kosowski Case When attorney Steven Cozzi arrived for work at his Largo, Florida, law office in March 2023, there was little reason to believe he wouldn't be going home that evening. Then he vanished. His wallet, phone and keys were left behind. Investigators found blood inside the men's restroom at the law firm, but there was no sign of Cozzi himself. His body has never been recovered. What followed was an extraordinary murder investigation that eventually led authorities to Dr. Tomasz Kosowski, a plastic surgeon locked in a bitter legal dispute involving the medical practice where he had once worked. Cozzi represented defendants in that litigation, and prosecutors argued that Kosowski's anger over the case had become an obsession. The evidence investigators assembled told a chilling story: surveillance footage, forensic evidence, movements before and after Cozzi disappeared, and a trail prosecutors said connected Kosowski directly to the attorney's death—even without a body. But the case took another remarkable turn when Kosowski went to trial for first-degree murder and made a decision that dramatically raised the stakes: He represented himself. Facing the possibility of a death sentence, Kosowski questioned witnesses, challenged evidence and personally attempted to convince the court that prosecutors had accused the wrong man. It didn't work. In September 2026, Kosowski was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Steven Cozzi. This week on Criminal Mischief, Carolyn Ossorio takes us inside the disappearance of Steven Cozzi, the evidence that transformed a missing-person investigation into a murder case, the bitter legal conflict prosecutors said supplied a motive, and the extraordinary spectacle of an accused killer attempting to defend himself against a case that could ultimately cost him his life. And at the center of it all remains one haunting unanswered question: Where is Steven Cozzi?
