The 3rd note in a chord holds its emotion. So, to emphasize the happiness of a major chord, play its 3rd in the melody above (e.g. over Cmaj, play E). To emphasize the sadness of a minor chord, play its 3rd (e.g. over Am, play C). Ray & Kate :) PS: This tip is from our 1-Hour Crash Course
