EPISODE 110 — What Is Market Cap — The Number Every Beginner Misunderstands

Market cap organises the entire crypto world. Open CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko and every asset is ranked by it. Bitcoin leads at over $1.3 trillion. The total crypto market sits at approximately $2.4 trillion as of early 2026. Investors use market cap to compare assets, assess risk levels, and estimate growth potential. And yet market cap is one of the most consistently misunderstood metrics in the space — misunderstood in ways that lead to real, costly financial mistakes every day.

In this episode of Crypto for Beginners, we fix the most common market cap mistakes completely. We start with the formula: market cap equals circulating supply multiplied by current price. We immediately explain the most important implication — a single $1 trade in a token with one trillion units of supply creates a trillion-dollar market cap — and why this means market cap is emphatically not the money that has gone into an asset. It is the current price applied to every unit in existence.

We cover the three supply figures every crypto investor must understand: circulating supply — what is actually tradeable today; total supply — everything created including locked tokens held by teams, investors, and treasuries; and maximum supply — the absolute cap that will ever exist. We explain fully diluted valuation — FDV — in detail: what it is, how to calculate it, and why a project with 10% of tokens currently in circulation and a modest-looking market cap may have an FDV implying ten times more tokens hitting the market over the next three to five years. We cover vesting schedules, what cliff periods mean, and how to estimate when the largest token unlock events will arrive and what they typically do to price. We explain the three market cap tiers — large cap, mid cap, small cap — and what they tell you about risk and volatility. We cover Bitcoin dominance as a market signal and end with a clear framework for using market cap as a comparative tool rather than a quality signal.
