What does "Ye cannot serve God and mammon" mean? Matthew 6:19-24 (KJV): "No man can serve two masters," and where your eyes go, your heart follows. Sermon on the Mount Pt 25, hosted by Matt Hepner and TopLobsta.

Matt and TopLobsta stay in Matthew 6:19-24 and focus on verses 22-24: "The light of the body is the eye," and "No man can serve two masters... Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Israel looked at the bronze serpent; Hezekiah later broke it when it became an idol (2 Kings 18:4). "Unto thee lift I up mine eyes" (Psalm 123:1). "Call unto me, and I will answer thee" (Jeremiah 33:3). Elisha had to see Elijah taken up to receive the double portion (2 Kings 2:10). Job "made a covenant with mine eyes" (Job 31:1). After Peter's denial "the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter" (Luke 22:61).

Then the other master. Laodicea said, "I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing," not knowing it was "poor, and blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Paul: "I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12). "Godliness with contentment is great gain," and "the love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Timothy 6:6, 10). The sower: "cares and riches and pleasures of this life" choke the word (Luke 8:14), and "the deceitfulness of riches" (Matthew 13:22). Next week: Abraham and the king of Sodom in Genesis 14.
