Middle Grade Fantasy Just Got Serious: Giffy and the Sea People

THIS IS MIDDLE GRADE?! Eric Haan's Drakenaarde Chronicles Just Got DARK!

Dragons! Mysterious Sea People! Dangerous wizards! Shocking revelations! And... DEATH?! Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be middle-grade fantasy?!

In this spoiler-lite review, Jim dives into Giffy and the Sea People, the fourth installment in Eric Haan's The Drakenaarde Chronicles. And things are getting SERIOUS!

Following the dramatic cliffhangers of book three, Eric takes readers on an unexpected journey into Giffy's mysterious past, revealing surprising details about one of the series' most endearing characters. But once the story returns to the main timeline, the danger escalates dramatically as our heroes encounter the Sea People, dragons, and that dastardly wizard Rankin!

Jim explores FIVE reasons to read this book, including its wonderful character development, expanding fantasy world, excellent pacing, Christian themes, and increasingly serious stakes. But he also examines THREE reasons some readers might want to skip it, including questions about how naturally the faith-based elements fit into the narrative.

As a longtime friend of Eric Haan, Jim has followed this series from the beginning. But friendship doesn't guarantee a positive review! Does Eric deliver another winner, or has The Drakenaarde Chronicles finally stumbled?

And perhaps most importantly... is it pronounced GIF or JIF? Because this book FINALLY explains why Giffy's name is pronounced the way it is!

Join Jim for an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and occasionally irreverent look at a fantasy series that's growing more ambitious with every installment.
