Will raising interest rates make inflation worse? The OCR won’t fix an oil shock. Central banks, including the RBNZ, can create too much currency and crush demand, but they can’t print oil. When energy prices jump and stay high, raising rates mostly hits mortgage holders and businesses who use debt to grow - is it really wise to squeeze the part of the economy responsible for growth? In this conversation I talk with Christoph Schumacher, Professor of Economics and Innovation at Massey University, co-creator of GDPLive, and author of 'Sitting on the shoulders of giants'. Yields have already climbed to levels last seen in 2002 but most investors are still banking on the post-Covid inflation being a temporary spike. That was a solid assumption, but at almost a third of the way back to the 1981 highs, could it be time to look at this? I have sat across from hundreds of people with an inheritance coming, and almost always they make one of two mistakes. The less common one is when people take their foot off the gas - The knowledge of money coming justifies no budget, no discipline, no plan. Black holes for intergenerational wealth. The second mistake is worse, and I think it often comes from a decent instinct. People live like the money is never going to come. They play it safe. What if an inheritance didn't work as a safety net, but a permission slip? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Sign up to the fortnightly newsletter! It's a Holiday! No, wait, it isn't. It's no holiday when you're poor. You can sleep in the garage this summer and you'll be grateful. You're poor, and it sucks. Maybe there's a way out? Christians Against Poverty, or CAP, is an organisation devoted to fighting poverty and helping people break free from a cycle of debt. Sam Garaway talks to me about their collaboration between them and Sorted (The Retirement Commission) to bring to market an app that helps place a fence at the top of the cliff. You should donate to them. Know anyone who could benefit from a free money course with CAP? Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser). Dominic Frisby: comedian, author, and one of the sharpest voices on gold, Bitcoin, and government money. His main argument is that CPI figures have created a mass delusion effect, which hides the fact most Western countries have been in recession for years. Note: Views expressed in this one may trigger Keynesian belief systems and left-wing ideologies. Sorry about that. Book in a free 15-min phone call with Darcy Ungaro (financial adviser).
