The case for a higher GST, and what it could mean for you

SBS News In Depth

Show Notes

Grattan proposes a 15 per cent GST that includes food, with tax cuts and welfare payments to offset the cost.

The Grattan Institute says raising the GST from 10 to 15 per cent and extending it to food could help fund income tax cuts, welfare payments and state services. But both major parties have rejected the proposal, and concerns remain about its impact on households and inflation. SBS Finance Editor Ricardo Gonçalves speaks with Grattan Institute CEO Aruna Sathanapally, then examines the ASX’s rise, global tech selling and China’s growth with George Boubouras of K2 Asset Management.

In this episode:

• What a broader, higher GST could mean for household budgets, income tax and welfare payments

• Why the proposal faces political resistance, and the concerns about its impact on inflation

• What the ASX’s gains reveal as global technology stocks sell off and oil prices rise

• How stronger Chinese growth and unrest in France could affect investor sentiment and opportunities

SBS On the Money is a daily finance podcast where SBS Finance Editor Ricardo Gonçalves unpacks the ASX, the economy and the latest market moves with leading analysts and executives.
