Summary
New research suggests that neutron stars may serve as factories for axions, a candidate for dark matter. The study highlights the strong magnetic fields present in these stars, which could facilitate the production of axions through interactions with photons. The process involves complex conditions, including the alignment of electric and magnetic fields, which are typically resisted by nature. However, simulations indicate that neutron stars might overcome these challenges, potentially leading to significant axion production.
The findings also propose that axions could explain certain astronomical phenomena, such as pulsar radio jets and fast radio bursts. While current observations have not detected axions directly, the study outlines potential signatures that could emerge from axion clouds surrounding neutron stars. These clouds may influence the behavior of pulsars and could be detectable by advanced radio telescopes in the future. Although neutron stars may not produce enough axions to account for all dark matter, their role as ongoing sources could enhance our understanding of this elusive component of the universe.

Neutron stars aren't dark matter--we figured that out a while ago. But new research is telling us that they may be dark matter factories. They may produce the exotic axion, one of the most popular dark matter candidates.

It’s variously described as a measure of a system’s disorder - or as the amount of useful work that you can get from it - or as the information hidden by the system. Despite the seeming ambiguity in its definition, many physicists hold entropy to be behind one of the most fundamental laws of physics.Entropy Explained Playlisthttps://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsPUh22kYmNCzNFNDwxIug8q1Zz0Mj60HCheck out the Space Time Merch Storehttps://www.pbsspacetime.com/shopSign up for the mailing list to get episode notifications and hear special announcements!https://mailchi.mp/1a6eb8f2717d/spacetimeNORAD Paper:: https://web.archive.org/web/20100714011725/http://webpages.charter.net/dkessler/files/SourcesofOrbitalDebris.pdfHosted by Matt O'DowdWritten by Katherine McCormick and Matt O'Dowd Graphics by Leonardo Scholzer, Yago Ballarini, Pedro Osinski, Adriano Leal and Stephanie FariaGFX Visualizations: Katherine KorneiDirected by Andrew KornhaberAssistant Producer: Setare GholipourExecutive Producers: Eric Brown and Andrew KornhaberEnd Credits Music by J.R.S. Cosmological natural selection proposes exactly this - but even better, it claims to be able to test the hypothesis.Sign Up on Patreon to get access to the Space Time Discord! https://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetimeSign up for the mailing list to get episode notifications and hear special announcements!https://mailchi.mp/1a6eb8f2717d/spacetimeCheck out the Space Time Merch Storehttps://pbsspacetime.com/Physicists have been struggling for some time to figure out why our universe is so comfy. Why, for example, are the fundamental constants - like the mass of the electron or the strength of the forces - just right for the emergence of life? Tweak them too much and life, stars, galaxies, the universe as we know it wouldn’t exist. In recent episodes we explored one possible explanation for this - the anthropic principle and the idea of the multiverse. If there are countless universes with different fundamental constants, then it’s not surprising that a few exist with the right numbers for life - and certainly not surprising that we find ourselves in one of those good ones. But if you don’t like the anthropic principle - and many scientists don’t - then rest assured, there’s an alternative. You only need to accept two things: that our universe formed inside a black hole, and that universes can evolve.Hosted by Matt O'DowdWritten by Matt O'DowdGraphics by Leonardo Scholzer and Adriano LealDirected by: Andrew KornhaberExecutive Producers: Eric Brown and Andrew KornhaberEnd Credits Music by J.R.S.
