S5E1: Viral Haemorrhagic Fever | The National Isolation Unit
TheCase.Report - An Irish Emergency Medicine PodcastShow Notes
Welcome back to TheCase.Report, it's our first episode of season 5!
It's hard to believe that we're moving into the 5th year of TCR! All the way back in our first ever episode we had an infective case that was very topical at the time - covid - And so to kick things off for Season 5, we're looking at another highly infective case of viral haemorrhagic fever.
Joining us on our case this month are our NCHDs Conor O’Gara, Leah Flanagan and Ralph Hurley O’Dwyer, who treat us to a comprehensive run through of the case.
We were delighted to be joined by Dr Deirdre Morley and Dr Catherine Uhomoibhi for the second segment in the episode. They are working as co-leads on the development of the National High Level Isolation Unit (HLIU), and discuss the process of designing the HLIU as well as some Irish-led international simulation they've been leading in the Infective Diseases sphere.
As always, don’t forget to follow us on socials on instagram, x and facebook to keep updated with all things TCR. Coffee in hand? Right then, let’s get to it!

We really have the Irish Heart Foundation's #HerHeartMatters campaign to thank for this month's theme, and as we heard on last week's case and the fascinating discussion, is one well worth our time considering.

Welcome back to another episode of The Case.Report! This month we’re shaking things up a little as NCHDs Callum and Johnny work hard stabilising not just one patient, but an entire planetary ecosystem. Planet Earth has come to TCR resus in a critical condition and there’s no time to waste. With toxic levels of air pollution, rising global temperatures, escalating extreme weather events, threats to global food and water security, and a rapidly closing window to act - this is a health emergency beyond any doubt. Our adult in the room this month is the outstanding Professor Hugh Montgomery - Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London, Consultant in Cardiology and General Internal Medicine, Co-chair of The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts, and as always check out our Bluesky, Instagram, Facebook and X to keep updated with all things TCR.
