The life, legacy and assassination of an African revolutionary - Lisa Janae Bacon

TED-Ed

Summary

Thomas Sankara, a pivotal figure in Burkina Faso's history, rises from a soldier to a revolutionary leader, advocating for sweeping social and economic reforms. After studying in Madagascar, where he was inspired by local revolutionaries, Sankara returns to Upper Volta determined to combat colonial legacies and corruption. His charisma and oratory skills quickly earn him a position in the government, but his radical ideas clash with the existing administration, leading to his temporary ousting.

In 1983, following widespread civilian protests, Sankara becomes president and renames the country Burkina Faso, meaning "Land of Upright Men." He implements ambitious initiatives, including a national literacy campaign and environmental programs, while championing gender equality by appointing women to key roles and outlawing practices like forced marriages. However, his authoritarian measures and socialist policies alienate many, including former allies.

Sankara's leadership ends abruptly in 1987 when he is assassinated during a coup, allegedly orchestrated by his close friend Blaise Kampare. Despite the controversy surrounding his rule, Sankara's legacy endures, inspiring youth movements in Burkina Faso and influencing neighboring countries. His contributions to revolutionary thought are commemorated with a statue in the capital, solidifying his status as an iconic figure in the fight for social justice.
