Why Sunlight Beats Vitamin D | Dr. Roger Seheult

The Signal with Jonathan Jarecki

Show Notes

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Roger Seheult, MD, is a physician quadruple board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University, and the co-founder of MedCram. Today, he explains why vitamin D levels strongly predicted COVID-19 outcomes while vitamin D supplementation largely failed to reproduce the benefit, and makes the case that vitamin D is a marker for sunlight exposure rather than the primary mechanism behind it. He describes the near-infrared portion of sunlight which penetrates through the human body, and the hypothesis that it stimulates melatonin produced inside mitochondria, where it acts as a local antioxidant. We discuss randomized trials of infrared light in hospitalized and ICU patients, why greenery reflects infrared while concrete absorbs it, the Green Heart Louisville tree-planting trial, evidence that bright light at night predicts higher mortality, the NEWSTART framework, the Adventist Health Study, and published research on faith, forgiveness, and health.

Cameron Borg, MSc, is a science writer and host of the Ricci Flow Nutrition Podcast, with a Master's degree in Medical Science majoring in Nutrition from The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he completed his thesis with the Zubarev lab on biological isotope fractionation. He explains that tissues across species appear to regulate their carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 content toward a preferred set point. This challenges ecology's long-held "static delta" assumption. He also explains how C4 sugars from corn and cane leave a detectable carbon-13 signature in human red blood cells, and why synthetic supplements may differ isotopically from natural forms. We also discuss the limits of the calorie in complex systems, the Energy Resistance Principle, questions about ATP's "high-energy" bond, and how shade, near-infrared light, and blue twilight shape the light signals your body receives. You'll come away with a systems-level view of nutrition and light, plus practical ideas for aligning your environmental signals. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Glen Jeffery, PhD, a professor of neuroscience at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and a leading expert on how light interacts with mitochondria to shape health and aging. Today, he discusses how red and near-infrared light penetrate deep into the body and improve mitochondrial function and overall health. We also discuss how detrimental modern indoor life has become and why expensive red light panels are likely unnecessary and possibly harmful. By the end, you'll understand sunlight as a biological input your body evolved to depend on and the low-cost, practical steps you can take to get more of it.

Dr. Max Gulhane (MD) is a practising family medicine physician and health-optimising physician with a passion for root-cause analysis of human chronic disease and longevity. We discuss the full solar spectrum and how ultraviolet, visible, blue, red and near-infrared light each affect human physiology, including the POMC pathway, nitric oxide and blood pressure, and the evidence on sunlight, skin cancer and the vitamin D paradox. We discuss how artificial light at night suppresses melatonin and disrupts the circadian control of DNA repair, cardiovascular health, and metabolism. For those interested in light and circadian health, Dr. Gulhane offers a grounded, mechanism-focused framework for aligning daily light exposure with human biology.
