Summary
The tale of "The Last of the Dragons" unfolds in a time when dragons were once common but have nearly vanished from Europe, leaving only one in England. This dragon, a formidable creature residing in Cornwall, is feared by all, including the king's daughter, who is expected to be rescued from it by a prince. However, the princess, skilled in fencing and determined to take her fate into her own hands, proposes an unconventional plan: instead of being rescued, she wishes to confront the dragon herself.
On the eve of her expected rescue, the princess meets the prince and convinces him to help her free herself from the dragon rather than waiting for him to save her. When they finally confront the dragon, they discover that it is not the fearsome beast they imagined. Instead, the dragon reveals its desire for companionship and kindness rather than conflict. The princess and prince decide to tame the dragon instead of slaying it, leading to a heartwarming resolution where the dragon, named Fred, becomes a beloved companion and even a source of joy for children in their kingdom.
Ultimately, Fred transforms from a feared dragon into a cherished friend, showcasing a narrative shift from traditional tales of heroism to one that emphasizes understanding and compassion. The story concludes with Fred evolving into a mechanical contraption, symbolizing the blend of old and new, as he becomes the first airplane, ensuring that he remains a part of the kingdom's legacy.
