What happened after September 11, 2001 — when the cameras stopped showing the attacks and America began dealing with everything that came next? The story of 9/11 is usually told through the events of a single morning. But some of the most extraordinary chapters began only afterward: an almost empty sky over the United States, thousands of aircraft ordered to land, hospitals preparing for patients who never arrived, months of recovery work at Ground Zero, and families searching for people who would never come home. In this documentary, we explore the aftermath of September 11 — the enormous logistical, medical and human response that unfolded after the attacks. We begin with one of the most remarkable aviation operations in modern history. With thousands of aircraft still in American airspace, the FAA ordered departures stopped and aircraft already flying to land at suitable airports. The result was a sky unlike anything air traffic controllers had seen before. Across the border, Canada suddenly became part of the response. More than 200 aircraft were diverted to Canadian airports, while the small Newfoundland community of Gander received 38 unexpected flights. Thousands of stranded passengers were housed in schools, churches and community buildings as local residents organized food, transportation, medicine and places to sleep. The documentary also follows what happened at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, two parts of the story often overshadowed by New York, and examines how emergency responders confronted situations for which conventional disaster planning offered few answers. Then we return to New York, where hospitals prepared for an enormous wave of casualties that largely never arrived. As hope of finding survivors faded, the operation at Ground Zero transformed from rescue into one of the largest recovery and forensic efforts in American history. We examine the months spent searching through debris, the extraordinary challenge of identifying victims through DNA, the families who waited years for answers, and the long-term health consequences faced by many responders and people exposed to the dust surrounding the site.
