Paul McCartney, "Press to Play" (1986) Part 1

Untitled Beatles Podcast

Show Notes

Forgive us, dear reader, for sounding Jaded. But most real McCartney fans will admit that Aerosmith’s 2001 LP “Just Push Play” is better than literally any solo Macca; and perhaps even better than most Beatles albums. (*Does not include “Live At The Star Club Vol. 2”) But, in turn, would there even be an Aerosmith without Macca’s 1986 offering, “Press To Play”? We’ll leave that to the rock scholars to decide. But one thing is for sure: “Press To Play” is now officially 40 years old, or, in U.S. presidential terms, at least three decades older than the girls a certain orange baboon used to regularly party with. (In fairness, it’s tough for real patriots to get too worked up about that, especially when Obama once wore a tan suit.) T.J.’s been in love with this cassette since its release the summer of 1986. Tony’s had the opposite reaction since he was contractually obligated to listen to the album twice, in 2020 and 2026; in brave service of arguably America’s Favorite Podcast (TM). This week, the Gab Two discuss whether “Press To Play” has aged well and warrants more respect in Macca's catalog. Does it deserve an Archive Collection reissue before or after “Ocean’s Kingdom”? Are there more remixes of “Press” than there are takes of “Not Guilty”? And what about the other pertinent Beatles questions you won’t hear on woke Newsmax, like: 👋💨 Is Phil Collins’ best release, “Hello…I Must Be Going [And He Never Returned]”? And for the answer, should somebody bring Phil Collins in? 💔🕺 Can Tony retire from his collection of mint, K-Tel Breakdancing LP’s? And is the greatest song about breakdancing Irene Cara’s “Breakdancing”? 💀🚫 Did the sad origins of the “MAHA” movement emanate directly from Mac & Jack’s Wonder Potion? #SaySaySay

Mono is the only way to truly the enjoy The Beatles. If you want to listen to stereo Beatles, put on a Perry Como record. It’s the same thing. The Beatles never wanted you to hear those mixes. You shouldn’t even be listening to them. They’ll confuse you. 5 point what?? 1 POINT WHOM??? Many great historians have noted that Van Gogh cut off his ear in order to enjoy Rubber Soul in true mono. More Rush? Rush? More! Hurry hurry lover, come to me! That hit was performed by Paula Abdul, and oooooh I’m running for congress... what a spooooooooky last name... lock your doors and BEWARE OF PAULA ABDUL!!! And this hit episode - now #17 on “Chicago Improv Beatles Podcasts!” - continues the Rushmore journey of some loyal fans of the show. Good news: there’s no more overtures! Better news: the guys take the listener contributions to the next level, as they level up to a level that's a whole new level. Loyal Discordant Steve My Kitten Alone asked how we’d introduce the Beatles to others; who might not share the same passion for or knowledge of the band. In other words, jag bags. But that’s not all! Do we talk about other stuff? Are there other questions? Questions like? 🍆🍔 Who knew Tony was such a big Mac-Head? (That’s a Fleetwood Mac die-hard, someone who’s loved the band both pre-and-post Peter Gabriel. You know, a real fan?) #BigMacHead 📖🐞 Is there enough interest in the topic of Beatles Missionaries to write a highly unauthorized parody of “Book of Mormon”, but with all Beatles songs? #HasaDigaYesterday 💙🧡 (Angry Chicago barfly, he’s wistfully drinking a Malort & Old Style, ruminating on the passing of Mike Ditka) “Me & Coach Ditka didn’t know each other or nothing. But when me & Diane were going through our hardest times, the ’85 Bears is the only real connection we could muster. She got legally cleared to make sweet love to me Sunday mornings at 11, during the Coach Ditka & Johnny Morris show on Channel 2, WBBM. I used to pay her to pretend she was Jeannie Morris, but she looked more like Linda Yu. Well. Now Da Coach is gone, and Diane is, too. She’s in Tampa, but still. #RipCoachDitka

Now somewhere in the black mining hills of Dakota There was a podcast made by a couple of fooooooools The Gab Two are back at it, rounding out their Rushmores and crowning a couple Crazy Horses. Between blasts of dynamite and pallets of plaster, Tony and T.J. find out: 🎢 On the Mount Rushmore of defunct Chicago amusement parks, is Lincoln Old Chicago? (Answer: Of course not. Kiddieland is Lincoln, Riverview Park is Washington, the Showbiz Pizza Place on Kedzie is Jefferson, and the Sears on Lawrence is Teddy Roosevelt. The Crazy Horse slot is being reserved for Santa’s Village. #HeNotGone?) 🥁 What part of T.J.’s soul is missing that prevents him from appreciating the Glenn Kotche masterclass that is Wilco’s “Shake it Off”…? ⏱ Which will be finished first: this episode, or Crazy Horse?

As the leaves turn “Drive My Car Orange” and “Nowhere Man Taupe” in anticipation of next week’s long-awaited Rubber Soul SDE, we here at UBP HQ are taking some time to honor a few non-fab artists. With chisels and rasps in hand, T.J. and Tony carve away at the sacred Meigs Field granite peak, each revealing their favorite musical performers that aren’t John, Paul, George, Ringo, Jimmie or Purdie. It’s Mount Rushmore Beyond The Beatles! Throughout this laborious process they also wonder: 📻🪗 Has radio station WKRP ever played Mike Post’s version of the theme to CSI: Cincinnati (aka “Squeeze Box”)? 🌶️🚽 Speaking of 5-way chili, I’m at a party and I feel a “Jammin on the 2” coming on… Where’s the nearest bathroom??? 🎄💣 Did the Untitled Beatles Podcast just declare a War on Billy Joel’s “Christmas in Fallujah”? Please feel free to share your Mt. Rushmore artists that aren’t The Beatles. EPISODE LINKS

New Episode Alert! We’re falling for fall at the Untitled Beatles Podcast, especially because Rubber Soul is coming up, like a flower! And now more expansive/expensive than ever! Tony & T.J. share their thoughts on this forthcoming, much anticipated, deluxe version and also ask: 🎤 How many instrumental versions must an album contain before it’s legally filed under “Karaoke”? #FileUnderKaraoke 🎞️ Sure, George Martin wasn’t a huge fan of the U.S. albums; but what are the odds he simply adored “Reel Music”? AND HOW COME HIS NEOPO BABY KID AIN’T GOT THE STONES TO REMIX “MOVIE MEDLEY” LIKE PRODUCER CASEY DID IN HIS SLEEP? AND HOW COME MURAKAMI CAN’T HIT NO MORE? 🕺🏿 Where my community of hefty disco people who wanna see Tom Bosley freak out at?
