144: Neurodivergence and the Christian life (Part 2)

Centre for Christian Living

Show Notes

On the CCL podcast, we’ve been exploring the topic of “Neurodivergence and the Christian life”. In our first episode, we opened up the issue and heard many wonderful, extraordinary and moving stories from neurodivergent people about their experiences, and the questions and issues that arise from their experiences—especially in relation to Christianity, the Christian life and church life. In this episode, which is Part 2 of 3 in our series, we will look at what the Bible has to say about these questions, and how we might think about these things from the perspective of God and his revelation about his world and our lives—through the themes of Creation and the Fall, ability, the Spirit and weakness, and community and the body of Christ. (Please note: Part 3 will be published in a fortnight’s time.) For an edited transcript and show notes, visit our website. Did you grow up going to a church, or do you go to a church, where the Ten Commandments are on a kind of stone tablet up the front? When you became a Christian, was one of the basic practices of discipleship to learn the Ten Commandments? These things aren’t very common today, and maybe you think that’s a good thing. But there’s no doubting the fact that for most of the last 2000 years and for most Christians, the Ten Commandments have played a fundamental role in what it means for Christians to obey God and to do his will. We know we’re not under law, we’re under grace. But does that mean that foundational Old Testament teaching like the Ten Commandments don’t matter very much anymore? If they do matter, how do they matter? CCL Director Tony Payne discusses these things with Two Ways Ministries Bible teacher and evangelist Phillip Jensen, drawing on Phillip’s new book on the subject, Written on Our Hearts. How do you feel about the idea that the nature of the Christian life is the formation of virtue, and that the role of a pastor is to do his part to help form the virtue or the moral character of his congregation? Are you shocked—or puzzled or suspicious, perhaps? Or are you confused, because you don’t know what “virtue” means? In this episode of the CCL podcast, CCL Director Tony Payne and Chase Kuhn, Rector of St Matthias Centennial Park in Sydney and former ethics lecturer at Moore College, think about what virtue and morality have to do with the Christian life, with our church life and with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Being involved in Christian ministry—the ministry of the gospel—in some way is just part of being a Christian. The Christian life is a team life—a life in which we minister the gospel together. But what exactly is the contribution of every Christian to the overall ministry of the gospel and the ministry of a church? What is the every member ministry of the Christian? In the New Testament, there's a very clear emphasis on what the every member ministry of the Christian is really about: it's about the word of the gospel we speak to each other. But this is not something we're used to thinking about. In the latest episode of the Centre for Christian Living podcast, Moore College student Liam Nolan talks to Tony Payne about his new book, Let the Word Dwell Richly and the “one-another” word: what it is, what it does, why we find it hard to speak, and what we can do to foster that sort of encouragement and exhortation in our churches. Here at Moore College, we’ve been thinking about the rise and spread of generative AI and what it means for education—for our students and lecturers. One thing we’ve been determined to do is not just use AI pragmatically (i.e. asking “How can we make the best use of this new technology while avoiding its pitfalls?”), but also think about what generative AI means theologically and morally. How does AI relate to what we believe human personhood, intelligence and mind is on the basis of God’s revelation to us of what all these things mean in Christ? In this episode of the Centre for Christian Living podcast, hear Tony Payne chat to writer, lecturer and podcaster Alastair Roberts about the theological and moral meaning of AI and its rise. Have you ever debated the question, “Is it ever okay to lie?”? If so, it usually doesn’t take very long for someone to raise the uncomfortable fact that people in the Bible—particularly people in the Old Testament—lie quite a bit. Furthermore, not only do they get away with it, they’re often commended for it—like the Hebrew midwives in Exodus 1:15-21, who lie to Pharaoh about what’s going on with the Hebrew babies, and Jehu in 2 King 10, who very deceptively lures the prophets of Baal into a trap and then kills them all. If you’ve ever wondered about those incidents, what to make of them and what the implications are for the Christian life, tune into Tony Payne’s conversation with Moore College Old Testament Lecturer Jack Day in this episode of the Centre for Christian Living podcast.
