How in the world could writing down your feelings actually relieve chronic pain? I know, it sounds ridiculous. I thought so too when I first walked into Dr. John Sarno’s office, barely able to function because my back pain was so severe, and he started talking to me about repressed emotions. I was skeptical, insulted, and desperate. And yet, here I am, more than 25 years later, having lived the truth of this work and watched countless others transform their lives through it.
This week, I'm bringing together a few things that have been on my mind since my recent conversation with Lauryn and Michael Bosstick on The Bossticks podcast, a fantastic Instagram video from Elizabeth Endres of The Wellness Process, and my latest Substack article, How the Fck Is Journaling Going to Heal My Chronic Pain?*
Because I get it. When you're suffering from debilitating pain, migraines, IBS, anxiety, or any number of chronic symptoms, the suggestion that emotional expression could change your physical experience can feel almost offensive. Especially when you've been sick for years, have a diagnosis, or have been told your condition runs in your family. But there is real neuroscience behind the mind-body connection, and understanding it can change everything.
In today's episode, I want to help you bridge the gap between skepticism and possibility. We'll talk about why your brain and nervous system can produce very real physical symptoms in response to emotional stress, what I mean by the emotional reservoir, and why JournalSpeak is so much more than simply writing in a journal. I'll also explain the three legs of the stool that form the foundation of my work: Believe, Do the Work, and Patience & Kindness.
You'll hear Elizabeth's powerful perspective on the privilege of being able to dismiss someone else's healing, along with my own reading of this week's Substack article, which I've made completely free because I want everyone to have access to this conversation.
Your pain is real. You are not imagining it, and you are not doing anything wrong. But there may be an entirely different way to understand what's happening in your body, and I want you to have the opportunity to explore it.
Come with an open mind, even if you're scared and skeptical. Especially if you're skeptical! You have so much more power than you realize.
I send you big love. ❤️ xo, n.
