Translating Heart Intelligence

Questioning Automation, Self-Reliance, and What Freedom Really Means

Kenna walks Justin through a long list of personal questions she has been asking herself about automation, fair compensation, and self-reliance, drawing on a failed family homestead attempt and years of letter-writing, while the two also trade thoughts on America.gov, mortgages, and where each of them draws the line on convenience.

A Shout-Out And A Question-Led Hour Justin opens Translating Heart Intelligence by greeting Kenna on a nice Tuesday afternoon. Before the week's topic, Kenna asks on air to thank a friend, Lucia Nicola Evans, who she says models unconditional love and runs a Friday authenticity series she has found valuable, pointing listeners to lucianicolaevans.com. She is careful to say she does not speak for Lucia or for Justin, only for herself. She then frames the hour's real subject, a set of questions she has been asking herself for a long time about automation and artificial intelligence, now often reframed as superintelligence, and how it might reshape jobs and daily life. Rather than offer answers, she tells Justin she wants to think out loud through these questions, hoping listeners can use them as mirrors for their own lives. Justin agrees, noting that everyone, himself included, will land on different answers depending on what matters to them personally.

Robots, Rosie, And Who Gets Paid Kenna's first big question asks whether automation could actually free people from survival labor rather than threaten it, wondering what she would do with reclaimed time and how far such help should go. She invokes Rosie, the robotic maid from The Jetsons, as shorthand for a house-cleaning robot, admitting she would not want even a Roomba in her home. That leads her to notice how much of daily life already runs on automation, from machine-milled jersey cotton to mass-produced screws and Oreos, and how little of her own town could actually feed itself from local farms alone. She says it makes her sick to see a crocheted item sold for a dollar in a craft store, since hand-crocheting takes hours and nobody making it could be fairly paid at that price, so she refuses to buy it. Justin jokes the math works out to about a quarter an hour, and the two agree fair compensation matters to her more than convenience.

Dividends, Boredom, And The Value Of Time Kenna shifts to an automation or tariff dividend letter she wrote in December, asking what might change if people had enough financial stability to stop fearing falling behind. She worries aloud that guaranteed income could just make people lazy, and Justin answers that laziness would simply be their choice, since people like that already exist. Kenna connects this to retirement, where she has watched people get bored once survival work disappears, and wonders whether society has forgotten how to sit with boredom now that machines make fabric, pottery, and goods that once took real time to produce by hand. She frames the Industrial Revolution itself as a kind of legacy, making life easier while quietly eroding people's ability to make things for themselves, and asks what happens to a self-reliance skill once a generation no longer needs it, especially if supply chains or sanctions cut off imported goods entirely.

Drawing Personal Lines Around Technology The conversation turns to where each of them draws boundaries with convenience. Kenna says she refuses a Wi-Fi-connected washing machine because she does not want a tool that can be remotely controlled, and Justin agrees about his thermostat, saying appliances should not stop working just because they lose a connection. He adds that he actually likes GPS, since he has no sense of direction, but insists a car should never have a remote shutoff switch or a face scanner deciding whether a licensed, law-abiding owner gets to drive it that day. The pair laugh about Justin's wish for a cupboard that quietly cleans
