Crime Talk with Scott ReischShow Notes
A father is on trial over the death of 7-year-old Ethan Hauschultz. Prosecutors say Timothy Hauschultz created the punishment that required Ethan to carry a 44.4-pound log and then left his 14-year-old son Damian in charge. Damian later admitted hitting and kicking Ethan and covering him with snow. He pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. Now the jury has to decide whether Timothy can also be held criminally responsible. Also today: Nick Reiner is back in court as both sides fight to keep grand jury transcripts sealed. Idaho prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Andrea Shaw in the deaths of her 18-month-old twin sons. A Florida police officer is accused of using information from a welfare check to take over a dead man's house. A Virginia husband allegedly tapes his wife to a chair and leaves her in the basement. And new developments in the Cornell 7 case put more pressure on Cornell University's leadership. Plus Legal History, the Legal Quote of the Day, and today's Dumb Criminal. Crime Talk with Scott Reisch. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Nick Reiner is accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. Now he is asking the court for access to trust money he says was already supposed to be distributed to him years ago. The legal fight is a fascinating one. Can someone accused of killing the people who created the trust still demand that money for his defense? Reiner's attorneys say the money was already his and that he is still presumed innocent. Trustees and opposing parties point to the law designed to prevent killers from profiting from their victims. Today, we break down the trust dispute, the defense argument, the prosecution angle, and why this financial fight could shape the entire murder case going forward. #CrimeTalk #NickReiner #TrueCrime #RobReiner

New questions are surrounding the Cornell 7 controversy after recordings reportedly captured a longtime fraternity adviser claiming he had connections inside Cornell University Police and could call in "favors." The recordings involve a different Cornell fraternity and do not establish that police protected the men accused in the Cornell 7 lawsuit, but they arrive while Cornell's handling of sexual misconduct allegations is already under intense scrutiny. BREAKING UPDATE: The David Prevatte murder trial has ended in a mistrial after allegations of juror misconduct disrupted deliberations. The day began with the judge investigating Juror Number Three over claims that she brought outside information into the jury room. She was ultimately removed, but as questioning of the remaining panel continued, additional concerns surfaced about information being discussed that had never been introduced as evidence. The judge ultimately determined the case could not continue with the jury and declared a mistrial. We added the breaking development to today's show after our original recording.
