Show Notes
Jaymee hosts Brandon Boyd—frontman of the iconic band Incubus, painter, surfer, lifelong spiritual explorer and new father —for a playful and thoughtful conversation about creative morality and the toll of success after decades in the spotlight. Brandon reflects on the strange miracle of a band of friends from California growing into one of the most beloved rock groups of their generation, while somehow managing to keep their sense of humor, experimentation, and inner life intact. Jaymee and Brandon explore the process of songwriting while driving, the sacrifice the muse asks of its receiver, the divine paradox hidden within truths, forging your own spiritual path, the wisdom we earn through what we wouldn’t wish upon ourselves, and the ideal beauty of being a new father at 50.

More from Love Is The Author
Former death row inmate and best selling author Damien Echols returns for his third conversation with Jaymee on the podcast in 3 months. Together they contemplate passages from the Shambhala Publications classic Crazy Wisdom by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, God vs. Buddhism, intelligence vs. wisdom, and the healing power of relationship for the prison of our mind. Damien's new book The Alchemy Of The Broken Blade is available wherever fine books are sold.
As Jaymee's 50th birthday approaches, the Street Monk himself reflects in a solo episode on his incredible life journey: from homelessness and addiction to recovery, fatherhood, spiritual mentorship, and key life lessons learned: how to love, how to believe, how to see the things behind things behind things until we only see ourselves. Encounters along the way with The Deftones, MC Ren, Jaleel White, playing music and acting on That 70's Show, owning a rehab, and finding Tibetan Buddhism and unlocking a life path of service.
David Nichtern is a longtime Buddhist teacher, founder of Dharma Moon, author, musician and Emmy-winning composer whose life has unfolded at the peculiar intersection of meditation, creativity, culture, livelihood and the everyday predicament of being a person. David returns to the podcast for his fouth appearance, wandering through territory the LITA audience is most interested in: how to live the dharma when you’re not sitting on a cushion. Plus discussions on making a living without attachment, how to have sustainable relationships, and what happens when ancient wisdom is forced to survive contact with modern life.
Shamelle Gonzalez is a Tibetan Buddhist practitioner, translator, editor, retreatant, and the human being behind Jaymee’s favorite Instagram account, @PemaLotus, an extraordinary resource for authentic Tibetan Buddhist teachings. A conversation about what happens when the Dharma stops being something you’re interested in and becomes the architecture of your life.
Mystical/Cynical is a podcast formerly hosted by artist Daren Thomas Magee aka Real Fun, Wow! and Jaymee that boasts three seasons and 100 episodes. It's been a year and change since they ended the show, so Love Is The Author is hosting a two hour reunion show for end times sake.
