The Edmonton Oilers prepare for a matchup against the Calgary Flames after a recent game that saw them lose in a shootout despite leading three times. The team’s defensive struggles were highlighted, particularly a critical six-on-five goal against them, which raised concerns about their penalty kill strategy. Coach Mike Babcock expressed dissatisfaction with the defensive play, particularly with players like Formington, who failed to secure the puck during key moments.

As the Oilers look to improve, discussions around player performance and lineup decisions arise. Matthias Ekholm has passed concussion protocols and is expected to return, while Jake Wallman faces scrutiny for his performance, leading to his potential benching. The conversation emphasizes the need for depth scoring and the importance of managing player minutes, especially for older players like Ekholm, to ensure they remain effective throughout the season.

Looking ahead, the Oilers are set to face the Flames, with expectations for star player Connor McDavid to bounce back after a couple of quiet games. The coaching staff is considering lineup adjustments, including the potential promotion of younger players like Howard, who has shown promise. The outcome of the upcoming games will be crucial as the Oilers aim to solidify their position in the competitive league.
