The ultimate Knicks-Spurs preview with Gary Payton, Malika Andrews, Fred Katz, and Jared Weiss from the first-ever NBA Finals Podcast Row (Part I)
The Sports Gossip ShowShow Notes
Madeline and Charlotte are back with one of the most exciting episodes yet before the NBA Finals kick off! The Sports Gossip Show was honored to be one of nine podcasts that the NBA invited to their first-ever Podcast Row. This episode is the first of two shows made up of observations from the Finals — and then interviews the gals conducted against the backdrop of the Spurs’ arena before Game 1.
The first guest is ABC/ESPN broadcaster Malika Andrews, who talks about sitting down with Karl-Anthony Towns, Jalen Brunson, and Victor Wembenyama, what it takes to work on the national stage, and how she decides who she thinks will win it all. Then, the gals talk to two dear friends of the show from The Athletic, Fred Katz and Jared Weiss. Fred spills some tea from his forthcoming book about the resurgence of the Knicks, and Jared talks about getting to know Wembenyama and the Spurs in his year covering the team. Fred also tells an unhinged story about Josh Hart and the candy Mike & Ikes.
Then, last but certainly not least, the gals sit down with NBA legend Gary Payton. He talks about why he won’t retire his number for anyone but the Seattle Supersonics, what it’s like having his son play in the league, and then he completes an absolutely ridiculous task that Madeline and Charlotte throw his way.
You don’t want to miss this one. The gals want to send a huge thanks to the NBA for this opportunity — and stayed tuned for Part II!

More from The Sports Gossip Show
Madeline and Charlotte are thrilled to be joined by Coach Jackie, the content creator and host of the new podcast “Is She Game?” The gals talk to Jackie about how she became an internet sensation and where she comes from, the WNBA Finals between the Dream and the Valkyries, Golden State head coach Natalie Nakase’s intense practice strategy, the importance of investing in women’s sports (it’s just good business!), a wild story in international cricket, and much more!
Madeline and Charlotte are back with another deep dive into a very famous athlete’s Instagram — this time, it’s LeBron James. LeBron is about to kick off his 24th season in the NBA, when the Sixers face the Knicks, and the gals have a feeling that he may be subtly crashing out on the internet. Madeline has been taking screenshots of LeBron’s Instagram Story posts since he announced he was joining the Sixers in July. He’s been posting up to 16 quote cards a day, seemingly of AI text. After an overview of LeBron’s career and history on social media, the gals get into their theories about how he’s facing his own mortality, his family, what happens when athletes retire, and why they think LeBron is really going through it.
Madeline and Charlotte are back with another episode about one of SGS’s main characters, Mr. Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. A new book just came out by Lars Anderson called Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness. The gals read the book and invited Jennifer Wilson, a staff writer at The New Yorker, to join them on the show, since she reviewed it. Madeline and Charlotte first talk about how the book backs up all their theories about what Tom has been going through recently via his social media. Then, the gals talk to Jennifer about what “the price of greatness” really means, missing political context in the story, the framing of his marriage to Gisele Bündchen, and who, at his core, the book reveals Tom to be.
Madeline and Charlotte are back with a jam-packed episode! First up: NFL updates — Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his coach Mike McCarthy got into it on the field, and Aaron won’t stop talking about his “pregnant wife.” Former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft house, so there’s that. The coverage around Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who was accused of sexual assault by 27 women, was shameful. Victor Wembenyama said that he will not be doing any gambling ads, and LeBron is using the Fanatics corporate helicopter to commute from Philly to New York City. And finally, the big story today: the unfortunate series of events that are going on surrounding the Indiana Fever and their players and fanbase. Kelsey Mitchell gave an exit interview in which she said it’s hard playing when Fever fans don’t like you, and that it can be hard to be on Caitlin Clark’s team. The Fever’s response was…not great, and a bunch of former players are speaking out. The gals break it all down.
Madeline is off today, so Charlotte is back with dear friend of the show Jessica Smetana to give you all the gossip you need for the WNBA playoffs! First up: Fever-Aces. The series is tied 1-1 after Caitlin Clark went off for 27 points on Tuesday night — but will the interaction Aja Wilson had with a fan fuel Las Vegas to a win in Game 3? Then, a quick tangent to talk about the senate hearing where a Republican confused the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Plus, some fun facts about the Fever head coach Steph White and a dissection of WNBA head coach style. The No. 8-seed Liberty swept the No.1-seed Lynx — did Minnesota’s vibes just run out? Where was star Olivia Miles? Charlotte reveals some fun facts about Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve and her wife, and the gals talk about whether Lynx star Napheesa Collier will resign. Wings star Paige Bueckers and soccer star Megan Rapinoe had a strange interaction before the Wings played the Valkyries, Jess loves the Mystics because of Sonia Citron, and the Dream are vibing. Finally, Jess talks about her beloved Chicago Sky.
