John Pipkin – 30,000 Hours of Responsibility

Episode 29 of Aviation-Quest.cc – Stories from Above takes us to South Carolina — and into the cockpit of one of aviation’s most seasoned professionals.

When this conversation was recorded on February 28, 2026, John Pipkin was 81 years old — on the threshold of his 82nd birthday — and still actively flying law enforcement missions for a sheriff’s department, supporting people on the ground with the same discipline that has defined his 30,000-hour career.

Predominantly a fixed-wing pilot across decades of airline, mission, and corporate aviation, his path also included significant professional helicopter operations — among them flying the iconic Sikorsky S-61.

In this telephone interview with host Jürgen Reis, John reflects on: • His early beginnings and the path into aviation • Missionary flying in Liberia and Haiti — when flying became about far more than the cockpit • Leadership as airline founder and Chief Pilot • Serving in decisive roles within the FAA • Flying airliners and later transporting global VIPs, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Julia Roberts with NetJets • The discipline required across both fixed-wing and rotorcraft operations • What truly separates a competent pilot from a great one — and why the answer may surprise you • His clear and timeless advice for young pilots starting their journey today

More than a résumé, this episode captures perspective — earned over decades and still applied in active service.

Intro and outro commentary by Jürgen Reis and co-host Stefan Lorenz (A320 First Officer).
