This is Lesson 3 of The Government of God: The Formation of a Disciple, a 12 part teaching series on the foundations of biblical discipleship and what it means to live under the government of God. In this lesson, Karla Callan takes a deeper look at the lordship of Jesus Christ and why calling Him “Lord” cannot simply be a title we use. Lordship is a governing reality. If Jesus is Lord, then His authority must reach beyond what we believe and into how we live, decide, respond, surrender, and walk out our faith every day. Following Christ requires a shift in the center of our lives. We cannot follow Jesus while continuing to make ourselves the ultimate authority. Discipleship calls us out of self governance and into surrender, where the will of Christ becomes the standard by which we order our lives. But surrender is not bondage. It is the pathway to freedom. In this lesson, we explore the daily practice of surrender, the cost of true discipleship, the tension between Jesus as Savior and Jesus as Lord, and the abundant life that becomes possible when we stop trying to govern ourselves and allow Christ to govern us. Every morning is another opportunity to take up your cross and surrender your will to the One who knows exactly what He created you to become. Jesus is not simply the Savior who rescued you. He is the Lord who governs you, forms you, and leads you into the life you were created to live. Abundant life flows from the right governance.
